Jil Sander Will Repeat Her Collaboration With Uniqlo

jil sander for uniqlo

While the minimalist designer helms Uniqlo overall, she also created a special line, +J, for the store.  Now it seems it’s done so well the Japanese retailer wants her to do another, Fashion Week Daily reports.

Our only trouble is that we can’t get the goods online.  We’re rooting for that to change (ahem, Uniqlo) but in the meantime, we recommend copping the crisp style elsewhere (though perhaps not from the Jil Sander line, since it’s no longer designed by Jil herself).  We prefer to directly channel Ms. Sander, with the perennially chic blazer and buttondown pairing.

For more of the look, try out some of our other favorite blazers and buttondowns (and then top it off with a scarf, for a little hint of color).

Though “Spring 2010 Fashion Recap” Sounds Anachronistic, You Can Make It Work For Winter

WWD recapped all their favorite shows for spring 2010. While we liked their top picks, our favorites were the ones that included details we’re happy to don right now.

chanelMadden Girl clogmatisse savannah shearling clog

Though they may have sparked quite the controversy, Chanel’s clogs captured our fancy along with WWD’s approval.  Unfortunately, the signature Chanel pair isn’t yet available (nor is any equivalent from the fashion house) but we’ve got a couple alternate options – Madden Girl’s wood-heeled clog with an open back channels the right look, and Matisse’s shearling clog is nearly the same shape as Chanel’s.

Missoni spring 2010 kintsMissoni Forsizia Mohair Cardigan J. Crew crinkle cardigan

WWD likes Missoni’s “haute hippie” knits.  We’d cop the style now with the line’s funky, built-in scarf cardigan or by picking up a cream-colored option that flaunts a little offbeat detail, like this crinkle chiffon ruffle cardigan from J. Crew.

Stella McCartney spring 2010Stella McCartney houndstooth blazerRugby Sullivan wool jacket

Perfect tailoring is always in style in our book, though we do agree we particularly like Stella McCartney’s just-right example of it here.  Get one of her warmer blazers this season (you can also just head to her GapKids line) or walk the line between the two looks with a tan wool jacket from Rugby that works during both fall and spring.

Feel free to explore more ways to get a hold of these styles before they hit the streets – we’d recommend shopping our guides to the best blazers and cardigans.

Top Five: Maxi Pads Are Back (No, Not That Kind)

Faster than you can say Joan Collins, the shoulder pad is making a comeback. Sharp and pointy, inflated, or simply hulking, this ’80s mainstay is a major fall trend in outerwear. To avoid looking like an unstoppable linebacker as you rush to work, go subtle with small pads or achieve a similar look with layering and large collars.

american retro kate jacket

Try balancing shoulder pads with a cropped fit.  This American Retro blazer ($264) gets the modern silhouette right. Jaeger London jacket

This contemporary take on the classic cropped jacket by Jaeger London ($371) has peaked shoulders and will go with everything from jeans to dressy slacks.

plaid jacket

Get volume with a vintage feel in this plaid, fitted jacket with a large collar from Vivienne Westwood ($793).

shapes study jacket

We like this Shapes Study Jacket ($98) for its combination of puffed sleeves and shoulder pads.

James and Elizabeth blazer

Two trends — the boyfriend blazer and shoulder pads — come together in this jacket by Elizabeth and James ($395).

Get more of the look with our guides to blazers and leather jackets, both of which will look very of-the-moment paired with a good pair of black jeans.

Our Fashion Week Favorites, From Designers And Attendees Alike

Whether they were on the models themselves or simply worn by particularly well-dressed attendees, New York Spring ‘10 Fashion Week exhibited a few trends we won’t be waiting until March to try.

fashion week editor's pick - crazy shoes

Whether they were strappy, buckled, or simply bizarre, dark and interesting footwear ruled the tents, on both models and show-goers.  We’ve got good options to indulge this look tout de suite.

fashion week editor's pick - the power jacket

Sharp shoulders made for some appealingly powerful jackets.  We’re happy to don this look now and then pull it out again next spring.

kate nobelius in the fashion business suit

We love the fashion-business suit, which consists of skinny jeans, a blazer, and a cool top.  It’s worn to perfection here by Kate Nobelius, the co-founder of Billion Dollar Babes.

body hugging dresses at fashion week

Forget your babydoll dresses for a while – Fashion Week showed us one body-hugging dress after another.

If this isn’t enough fashion, don’t fret, because we’ve got more.  Take a look at our guides to blazers, booties, and celebrity scarves.

Fashion Week Editor’s Pick: The Fashion-Biz Suit

Wandering around Bryant Park this week – and actually, anywhere fashion-related as fall approaches – one notices the distinct absence of women in suits. Fashion women don’t wear suits.

That doesn’t mean, however, that they don’t have a work uniform. Basically, the formula for looking professional-yet-fashion-y is skinny pants, a blousy tank or tee, and a blazer.

I watched the Charlotte Ronson and Monarchy shows from the American Express skybox, where both Kate Nobelius, co-founder of Billion Dollar Babes, and AmEx rep Ashley Chapman were both sporting the look.

Kate, who was outfitted by Bergdorf Goodman all week, is wearing a fabulous outfit with an equally fabulous price tag (albeit in different colors, but we like both combinations):

3.1 phillip lim beaded flapper dresshelmut lang leather pants3.1 phillip lim double breasted blazer

Her beaded top ($975) is by 3.1 Phillip Lim, and those Helmut Lang pants ($875) are made of leather. The jacket ($625) is also Phillip Lim. The pieces are gorgeous, but I think I’d be afraid to wear them all at once.

To get the look for under $300, pair a Banana Republic blazer ($198 – and wearable with everything in your closet) with a pair of Gap’s new Always Skinny jeans in charcoal ($50), and a sweet ruffled tank ($32) underneath for that signature soft-under-structured look.

Fashion Week Editor’s Pick: The Power Jacket Of The Future

From dramatic bondage styled shoes to angular black dresses, the New York Fashion Weekers at this morning’s Brian Reyes show were sporting some very futuristic fall ensembles. But the one item I [now] can’t wait to imitate? The peaked black blazer; it’s sort of Judy Jetson (gone over to the dark side) and looked both sexy and sophisticated over many a mini-dress at Bryant Park.

DandG peaked blazereandj blazer

I know, I know, shoulder pads have been considered pretty much the epitome of uncool for the past few decades, but I’m loving this semi-revival of Melanie Griffith’s Working Girl look. The structured blazer is a sharp finishing touch for any modern lady in a power suit. Try a clean cut D&G version ($695) or for something a little less militant, this Elizabeth and James blazer ($495) that features slight ruching at the shoulders.

In honor of all the Fashion Week action underway, why not update your fall wardrobe? Make it an excuse to shop and look through our guides for the best blazers, booties, and fall handbags.

Layer Up For Fall In One Of Our Favorite Blazers

blazerjcrew2-crop

Once upon a time, fall shopping meant loading up on fresh notebooks and newly sharpened pencils. Although you may still have a soft spot for the smell of new school supplies, we know what really tickles your fancy come autumn – that mouth-watering aroma of blazers in tweed, wool, flannel, and more.

Okay, so whether or not these fabrics have a discernable scent is debatable, but like grandma’s cookies, a nice blazer will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Plus, throwing a blazer over your favorite dresses and lightweight tops is a great way to maximize your summer wardrobe and save on fall’s pricier styles. We’ve got them all, from fitted and cropped to oversized boyfriend styles – check out our picks for the best blazers.

Military Jackets: A Welcome Change From Your Boring, Undisciplined Black Blazer

SPL93401_009

While at $11,000, Beyonce’s Balmain is a bit out of my range, I can’t help but love this incredibly chic military-inspired look.  Military jackets not only provide a welcome alternative to the basic blazer, but with their structured shapes and slimming cuts, they can be even more flattering.

Check out our three picks below for some wearable options that won’t leave you looking like a member of The Lonely Hearts Club Band.

express military jacket

1. An ideal denim jacket or blazer substitute, Express’ double-breasted military jacket ($79.50) is super flattering and trendy without being over the top.

balmain military jacket

2. This military jacket from McQ ($550) adds modern flair to a classic angular military shape.

3. Banana Republic’s Heritage military blazer ($152) serves up the trend in an understated, almost preppy manner.

Deal Of The Day: Up To 60% Off Blazers At J. Crew

We’re looking forward to suiting up this fall, but we don’t mind doing it with summer sale blazers.  Who wears a blazer in July, anyway?

j. crew artisan blazer

We like a gently-fitted, light-colored blazer with jeans (or with dark denim shorts, if we can’t hold out) – $70 from $178.

j. crew stretch chambray blazer

A stretch khaki blazer is a reliable basic, but one you shouldn’t shell out for ($120 from $168).

j. crew paper poplin blazer

This blazer also comes in navy and very pale pink.  We love its boxy cut ($30 from $79).

The Times Does Penney’s For A Second Round

Over the weekend The New York Times addressed its own article from freelancer Cintra Wilson, covering the new Manhattan J.C. Penney.  The original article was more or less universally viewed as a particularly New York brand of condescension, a rude attack on the store.

The rebuttal, by Clark Hoyt, notes the level of insult: Hoyt quotes the Times’ managing editor, Bill Keller, who mentioned that his mother was a Penney’s shopper, and she would have found Wilson’s review “snotty.”

While we don’t particularly feel Wilson’s pain about not being able to find a size 2 anywhere in the store, the reason we most agree with the Times’ rebuttal is that, hey, Penney’s has indeed been stepping up its game.

Just check out the great blazer we found.  It’ll get you into the second article’s camp in no time.

There’s more out there to get you in the mood for fall, from J.C. Penney or not – peruse our guides to the best leather jackets, trench coats, and foldover boots.
