Freebie Friday: Win A Copy Of Mrs. O: The Face Of Fashion Democracy

Mrs. O bookmichelle-obama-wears-pink-cardigan

What: Three copies of the new book about Michelle Obama’s fabulous style, Mrs O: The Face Of Fashion Democracy, from the founder and editor of Mrs-O.org. The site tirelessly tracks the First Lady’s fashion choices, and we visit often.

The book examines Mrs. Obama as a new style icon, with over 100 photos and interviews from the designers she’s worn again and again.

Why: We were early cheerleaders for Michelle Obama’s style, and we remain big supporters of her timeless fashion sense. This book is a great coffee-table addition, and (not that we’d encourage re-gifting a prize, but…) makes an equally fantastic gift for a really stylish friend, or as a nicer-than-signing-her-up-for-What Not To Wear-style hint.

How: Post a comment about your favorite aspect of Michelle Obama’s style – the kitten heels? Belted everything? Perhaps those sheath dresses in saturated hues? – and we’ll enter you to win the book.

1. Post a comment about why you like our First Lady’s style.

2. You must supply us with a valid email address and sign up for the SheFinds newsletter.

3. The contest starts now and entries must be date stamped by our server no later than Friday, October 2nd 2009 at 11:59 AM Eastern Time to be eligible.

4. Three winners will be selected during a random drawing. The winners will be contacted and must reply via email as instructed in the newsletter to claim the prize.

Non-Bridal White and New Navy Make Waves at the Emmys

On recent red carpets, jewel tones have taken center stage. At last night’s Emmys, however, it was all about mixing it up, color-wise. While there were the typical bright reds and safe blacks, we saw a lot of risky colors not often spotted at awards shows.

January Leighton Olivia

Lots of ladies opted for white (which Ryan Seacrest so wisely noted is a risky color, since hugging, pancake makeup and white satin don’t necessarily make the best bedfellows). January Jones and Olivia Wilde took white a step further, adding racy cutouts to the mix. And Leighton Meester went for the Grecian goddess look to great effect.

For an airy, Leighton-esque dress that doesn’t look too bridal, try Marc Bouwer’s Glamit! silk charmeuse gown ($795). Or get a more wearable take on January’s Art Deco style with White House’s white jacquard dress ($100).

WhiteDress_LONG WhiteDress_SHORT

Another color that emerged from jewel tones’ shadow was navy. Christina Applegate, who last year wowed in ice blue, went darker this year in a midnight-and-black asymmetrical gown by Basil Soda. And curvy Christina Hendricks opted for a rare cut in her short-sleeved navy gown with brocade detail.

If you were digging Christina H.’s decolletage-highlighting scoop neck, pick a short sleeved gown like the embellished one from JS Boutique ($180). For a shorter option that features chic black detailing, choose Free People’s mini for $90.

NavyDress_LONG NavyDress_SHORT

On the hair front, there were a lot of updos, but as the red carpet walkers would have you know, it was hotter than blazes in L.A. yesterday. The ladies who embraced big bodied hair and humidity-friendly waves from the start fared best. Sandra Oh, Alyson Hannigan and Vanessa Williams all went for long, loose waves that stood up to the heat without wilting.

Alyson Sandra

To get glam waves, treat wet locks with Living Proof Wave Shaping, Curl Defining Styling Cream ($24), a frizz-fighting cream that won’t weigh waves down. If you’ve already got a little curl in your hair, enhance it with a spritz of Curly Sexy Hair Curl Power Curl Enhancer ($13) for extra shine and bounce.

LivingProofCream CurlySexyHair

To get more Emmys style, we’d recommend a cocktail dress or a celebrity dress, along with some waterproof makeup (in case you need to look good in blazing heat like last night’s starlets).

Project Runway: Surf’s Up, Or Down, If You’re Mitchell

pr_ep3_1

When the show moved to LA for Lifetime, the only real, noticeable difference was the swap of New York’s steel backdrop for golden California scenery. So, it was only a matter of time before Project Runway took advantage of the left coast’s legendary beach culture. Witness: episode 3’s surfwear challenge.

pr_ep3_2

Designers had to work in pairs to design a “fun and fashionable surfwear look,” with one team member acting as the team leader. Even before Tim threw in the prerequisite Surprise! element–an avant garde outfit in addition to the first look–at least half of the design teams were on the rocks.

pr_ep3_johnnyirinapr_ep3_ramon

One of the strongest teams was Johnny and Irina, who put together a beaded racerback tank with a light sweater and flowing skirt that guest judge and former OC star Rachel Bilson said she’d wear in a heartbeat. But it was the unlikely team of Mitchell and Ra’mon who wowed hard-to-impress Nina Garcia with their ocean-inspired dress and lime neoprene avant garde dress.

pr_ep3_epperson

The problem for Mitchell, though, was that he let Ra’mon do all the work. Gotcha! So, he battled it out with Qristyl and Epperson, who fought constantly for control. Q. threw E. under the proverbial bus when it came time to judge their palm-frond dress (above), but Mitchell got the three-strikes penalty from Heidi.

madisonmarcus_beadedtankvelvet_electra

Straight from the mouths of surfer girls to designers’ ears, California style is inspired by comfort and colors of the beach. Like Johnny and Irina’s fave beaded tank, the Madison Marcus “Cascade” Beaded Ivory Top ($238) is delicate and functional at the same time. Even better, the classic racerback shows off sunkissed shoulders. Pair with a soft, fluid topper like this cashmere Velvet Electra Sweater ($297), for chilly fall nights. And if you’ve never tried anything from Velvet, the sheer softness of the clothes lives up to the name.

MaxChloe_Sutra

Did we mention the colors? The most successful thing about Ra’mon’s avant garde dress was the shocking green. These pretty Sutra Green Onyx Leaf Cluster Earrings ($200), made with sterling silver, yellow gold vermeil and gree onyx, add a little sand-and-sea sparkle to any outfit–without the neoprene.

Whether you need more fancy tanks or cardigans, we’ve got you covered with evening tops for jeans and our guide to the best cardigans out there.  And in case you need to catch up on Project Runway coverage, don’t forget to take a look at what happened last week.

Who Wears Short Shorts? The First Lady Does, And She Looks Good In Them

Michelle Obama bared all of her long legs this weekend during the Obama family vacation to the Grand Canyon. She wore (gasp!) short shorts in a city where the average temperature in August is close to 100 degrees. The poor lady was just trying to avoid heat exhaustion, which would have looked much more un-First Lady-like caught on camera if you ask me. Nonetheless, Mrs. O is taking heat for her unprecedented choice of pants – or lack thereof.
Michelle Obama in Shorts

Indeed, her outfit (thigh-high shorts and an unbuttoned blouse over a white cami) was a tad more laid back than the fitted sheath dresses and demure floral skirts we’ve been accustomed to seeing her in this summer, but come on guys, it’s hot down there!

It seems that in terms of fashion, Michelle is boldly going where no First Lady has gone before. Compare her to previous Presidential wives and criticize all you like, but seriously, would you have wanted to see Barbara Bush or Nancy Reagan in short shorts?

Shock political pundits just like Michelle in this pair from J. Crew ($49.50). And if you want more MOBama fashion, check out our buying guides for Michelle Obama style, cardigans, and summer dresses.

Apparently I Covet Kate Winslet And Her Sporty Modern Clothing Choices

image

What: Covet.com

Why: Its lame “Shop Without Sin” tagline belies an actually cool shopping tool that, with a little tweaking, provides personal-shopper-selected clothes, shoes, and handbags from third-party stores to your inbox. To get started, the Stylyzer tool—designed to winnow tastes—takes you through a series of celeb photos and asks you to choose between two different looks.

My result: Sporty Modern, but I tweaked it a little by adding a few other looks that also suited my style.

imageimage

You can then enter your specific sizes — a key difference from other shopping sites. And if you have time and want to get it just right, the tool has a Style Preferences section that lets you tell it what you don’t like. Hate orange stilettos and purple maxi dresses? You’ll never see them in your results. Submit selections and pick how often you’d like to receive shopping alerts (twice a week, daily, or Tuesdays) and you’re all set.

imageimage

You can also pick which brands you love and hate. So if I truly adhere to my Sporty Modern title, then BB Dakota and Joe's Jeans should be two favorite brands. While I wouldn't mind wearing this blazer ($50) and jeans ($163) combo for a casual night out, I'm more excited to see the picks delivered to my inbox next Tuesday.

He’s Just Not That Into You Brings The 90s Back…. And We’re Into It

image

We shuffled into the New York City theaters over the weekend to watch the highly-anticipated He’s Just Not That Into You, and as far as chick flicks go, this is a rather smart and funny romantic comedy. We think the movie’s worth some hard earned cash to watch it with your girlfriends and commiserate over your love lives (after which we think a martini might be in order) but the clothes are definitely cute and noteworthy. Here are some big trends you see featured in this movie:

image image

The main heroine Gigi, played by Ginnifer Goodwin, has that very giggly homage to 50’s pin-up girl mixed with slightly updated touches of 90’s goth. Gigi is almost always in very girly dresses in bohemian little prints paired with tights and cute cardigans. This adorable Kimchi Blue Knit Print V Neck Dress ($58) can be worn with black tights and this adorable Forever 21 Ribbed Cropped Cardigan (now $11) to achieve a similar look.

image image

Speaking of the 90’s, it appears plaid shirts are making a comeback. There was a lot of plaid in this movie, most notably worn my Jennifer Aniston’s character Beth. We recommend this Kettle Black Plaid Flannel Baby Doll Shirt ($110) with one of Aniston’s favorite denims (which we believe are the jeans also worn on camera), the Lofli Streamline Straight Leg Jean in Potassium Wash ($185.)

image image

Last but not least, there were so many shawl cardigan sweaters in this movie it made us upset we hadn’t brought ours to the theater. Impossibly easy options for office, errands, or evening, these little items have won our hearts as well. Go with this Gap Shawl Cardigan ($69) or for the long, gorgeous style seen on Aniston, give this Delphine Skinny Ribbed Cardigan ($245) a whirl.

Celeb Jewelry Find: Reese Witherspoon’s Clover Necklace

image

What: Reese Witherspoon’s Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alhambra Clover Necklace

Why: Didn’t we tell you about long gold necklaces and pendant necklaces being uber popular this season? That’s what we thought. The charming onyx and mother of pearl four leaf clovers on Reese’s Alhambra necklace must be extra lucky: the actress wears this casual classic almost everywhere. Van Cleef and Arpels re-imagined different eras in their newest collection, and the Alhambra line puts an exotic spin on the roaring ‘20s. The long, delicate chain and intricate, inlaid clover charms are reminiscent of The Great Gatsby’s ultra-stylish Daisy Buchanan if she’d been a Moroccan princess. Reese wears the piece to great effect, dressing up simple tanks and feminine blouses with the long strand.

Update: Looks like Van Cleef is none too happy about the clover knock-offs available. Read about what they are doing to make their clover the one-and-only and vote on whether you think they have a case or not.

Say What? Do You Know What A Tregging Is?

treggings

Lately, the fashion powers-that-be are starting to hint that unfortunately, the leggings ship has sailed. Lucky for us, though, the ultra-fashionistas do at least understand we’ll need some time to mourn the passing of this beloved trend. And so, “treggings” were born.

These trousers + leggings sort of kill two birds with one stone. They are as comfortable as leggings and from afar, can be mistaken for skinny jeans. But there’s a catch: you wear them on their own. There is no little cover up for your butt and thighs, it is just you, out there on your own, in stretchy pants. Hmm…

They first showed up in leather, worn with everything from over-the-knee boots to delicate ballet flats.

I think I’ll stick to black tights for now, but for all you brave ones, here are a few tregging-ish styles:

picture-116

I love this comfortable pegged option from Topshop ($50.)

rock-and-republic-denim-leggings

These Rich & Skinny denim leggings ($145) aren’t soooo scary – they’re really just a notch up from skinny jeans.

legging-jean

A slightly more casual look from Current/Elliott ($218) will help you ease into the trend.

While you’re perusing innovative new styles of pants, take a look at liquid leggings and celebrity denim.  Or just find the perfect pair of black pants.

Liquid Leggings: Good For Skinny Thighs, But What About The Rest Of Us?

Those of us who remember this trend from the 80’s are in a full-on fashion flashback now that we’re seeing leggings all over again. Originally paired with baggy sweatshirts, today’s celebs are bringing the style back with leggings in unique styles, fabrics, and cuts. Stars like Rihanna are rocking liquid leggings on the street and we’re all thinking they actually look somewhat decent….on her.

imagemembr2002312867_prod_medium_v1_m56577569831685820_sx201_1

Question is, if you’re not a size zero, how do you make this trend your own? Well, you can wear them like tights under a longer sweater, with a dress or skirt, or pair them with a long jacket. The idea is to keep tops simple and longer to elongate the line. Keep the color of the leggings complementary to your top half to create a streamlined effect.

david lerner basic leggingsHUE leggings

For those of you who wouldn’t dare try the actual liquid look (we hear you – anything that reflects light off your thighs should be approached with great caution), you can try a slightly more muted version of the trend with these basic leggings ($66) from David Lerner. For something a bit glossier, but just as comfortable, we suggest these HUE Liquid Leggings ($30).

Halloween Costumes: Shut It Down With Rachel Zoe’s Haute Hippie

image

Having covered The Rachel Zoe Project for an entire season, I figure what better time to dress up as my favorite rabid, super-shopping uber-stylist than Halloween? It’s now or never to try this look on for size – or to basically throw on all my accessories at once.

imageimage

If you care to join me, I would suggest starting with copious amounts of black eyeliner and mascara. Snag this Wet and Wild Kohl Eyeliner in Charcoal 655 ($1.50) and rim your eyes a couple of times, then follow with two coats of Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Very Black ($4.30).

python retro sunglasses

Throw on a pair of oversized sunglasses like these Python Retro Sunglasses ($6) and you’ve got the foundation for the look.

AE Furry Vestquilted saints tote

There are a few more things to get this haute hippie look: a faux fur vest, tons of statement accessories, and a huge oversized tote. This AE Furry Vest ($50) will definitely do the trick for little money. As for the bag, I think this Quilted Saints Tote ($44) will do just fine.

Accessorize with this Sterling Silver Marcasite Ring ($20) and Faceted Stone Bracelet ($9.50). Throw on some black jeans and a tank top and get ready to shut it down.

Five That Work: Jessica Simpson Shoes

Celebrity fashion lines can be tough to navigate. These gals can create hype for reasons that don’t depend upon a well-tailored pant, so it’s sometimes hard to tell if their forays into fashion are really worth your cash. We’ll comb through the virtual racks and show you the best of the star-branded items.

We know Jessica Simpson was on Mr. Blackwell’s definitive worst-dressed list this year. And all those terrycloth garments during Newlyweds may have been slight fashion missteps. But more than once when I’ve ooohed and ahhed at a friend’s well-appointed feet, it was Jessica Simpson (nominally, at least) who’d outfitted them. Not all of the designs in her line hit the style mark, but there are a number of exceedingly well-priced basics to be found. Here are our top five picks.

These round-toe pumps ($69) are more whimsical than the average pointy pair.

image

Red patent leather looks demure on these peep-toe wedges (were $68.95, now $34.89).

image

A sturdy heel and a platform make these python peep-toe pumps ($79) a solid choice for an evening out and about.

Jessica Simpson Acadia pumps

At almost four inches, these patent d’Orsay pumps ($79) have serious night-out potential.

Jessica Simpson d'orsay pump

In bejeweled leather, these flats ($75) are all glammed up and ready to go.

Jessica Simpson belta flat

In case Jessica’s just not your bag, we’d recommend checking out the best flat shoes, comfortable high heels, and boots to keep your shoe wardrobe complete.
