The Fashion Show Recap: Like Bethany And Kelly, Tinsley And Tulle Will Never Be Friends

Before we even got started into the 2nd episode, eco-designer Kristin (a bottom two denizen from last week) had already voluntarily jumped ship and left the show "in her best interest." Maybe she heard there would be tulle. But, we'll get to that later.

Tinsley Mortimer on Fashion Show

Isaac announced that teams had to design outfits for socialite and guest judge Tinsley Mortimer to attend four different events–a ladies' luncheon, an art gallery opening, a rock concert backstage party, and a charity gala–for just $40 each. And since her hair is Tinsley's trademark asset (not her money) the winning design must also be a head-to-toe winning look.

Evidently, when everyone on Team Harem told Laura not to use the red tulle, she was confused about whether they thought she should use the red tulle. Thus, this monstrosity that one industry audience member declared as "homeless" looking came to pass. What she should have done was look to Team Tube Skirt leader Anna, whose high-waisted skirt with front pleats paired with a sheer sleeveless top was one of Tinsley's faves.

Fashion Show, episode 2 winner Silence & Noice One Piece

Tube Skirt teammate Daniella took the blue ribbon with her strapless bustier jumper (available for purchase ($119), as well as the sheer jacket). Tinsley even offered to wear it out of the studio.

For another budget-friendly jumper, Silence & Noise makes a strapless knit one-piece ($58) that is short and simple with large pockets at the hip. You can also check out our other jumpsuit picks, if you're not feeling the shorts-and-tights vibe.

P.S. If you're wondering who Isaac "was not buying," just answer his rhetorial question: What's worse, a bad attitude or bad tulle? See ya, Laura.

Stars Airport Style: Do’s and Do Not’s

The three-hour, weather induced delay that stranded me in the Minneapolis airport this weekend gave me plenty of time to evaluate my fellow travelers’ airport style. And before you say, “Of course there were tons of don’ts, you were in

Minnesota!” just remember it’s the holidays, so there were plenty of stylistas passing through on there way back to the fashion meccas.

Who not to imitate: Mandy Moore. Sure, she’s cute, usually chic and probably going a little incognito in this photo. But too many of you were adopting sloppy comfortable styles like hers, rather than a low-fuss put-together look, which can be achieved just as easily. Actually, with the high boots, skinny jeans and sleek pashmina, it takes effort to imitate Mandy.

Mandy Moore

Who to be: Rosario Dawson. Her flat tan boots, trench coat, aviators and oversize purse are the perfect blend of comfort and practicality. She won’t get cold on the plane, she has enough space for all of her carry on stuff and she still looks good.

And The Celeb With The Best Hair (And Least Successful Clothing Line) Is…

image

Which celebrity has the most coveted hair in Hollywood? According to Trendhunter,
it’s none other than Lauren Conrad. The
Hills
star was last week’s top Yahoo search in the “hair” category, and it’s not
hard to see why. Her loose, casual waves and center part have timeless appeal
and are actually achievable without the help of your own personal Ken Paves.

 imageimage

This style works best on medium to long hair. First, blow dry, then start
grabbing individual one-inch sections and mist with hairspray. Pantene's Texturize! ($4.50) works well to separate pieces without weighing hair down. Wrap each section around a large-barrel
curling iron—we like Hot
Tools Big Bumper 1 1/2" Professional Marcel Hair Curling Iron
($25). Hold for a few
seconds, before carefully unclamping and sliding out the hair. Repeat.

The great thing about this style is that it doesn’t have to
be too perfect (and it actually looks
better if it’s not).

Check out our Hair at Home Guide for more ways to take care of your locks without the help of a pricey stylist.

Tie Dye Is Not Going Away, But At Least We’ve Moved Away From Dad’s T-Shirts

Since I wasn't ever a huge fan of tie dye when it made its third return in the 90s, I was really skeptical when I noticed it coming back on celebs like Victoria Beckham (in Balmain jeans) and Fergie (doing herself, and the trend, no favors in an unflattering pair).

However, I'm relieved to see that some designers are using tie dye in more toned down and interesting ways, instead of resorting to bleach and rubber bands in the backyard.

sass & bide Tie Dye Jeans

If you're game to try the denim, this pair of black sass & bide Tye Dye Jeans ($74, was $150)
is a more subtle choice, and still retains the slimming qualities of a skinny fit and basic black.

Aqua Bias Stripe Tie Dye Scarf

This Aqua Bias Stripe Tie Dye Scarf ($48) is colorful and lightweight..and looks enough not like tie dye that it could last you beyond the trend.

Foley + Corinna Mid City Tote, Dyed

The fold-over design and gorgeous grey leather of this Foley + Corinna Mid City Tote ($444) make the dyed design surpisingly versatile.

Gwyneth’s Latest GOOP Sounds Awfully Familiar

In her latest GOOP newsletter, Gwyneth Paltrow makes a "stars are just like us" complaint that she has NO idea what to wear when she goes back to work/live in Los Angeles. But, she does have some ideas.
Funny thing, SheFinds reported on these suggestions already, and (for obvious reasons) we think our picks are just a bit more exciting.

1. The Trench
There's really no argument against the classic trench. We just think our colorful suggestions make almost every outfit better.

2. Stripes
Gwyneth loves nautical stripes as a classic wardrobe item. So do we, but our taste test pick is a little less yachty and a lot more flattering.

3. A Jumpsuit
We highlighted jumpsuits as chic and easier-than-you-think wardrobe additions. Gwyneth agrees, but we wonder why she picked one that could double as an Aladdin Halloween costume and makes her normally toned tush look flat.
Gwyneth's also putting a bunch of her old stuff on eBay to raise money for charity – it's worth a look, if you like bidding on celeb hand-me-downs.

Celebrity Fashion… The Pantsuit is Back

Love it or leave, the black pantsuit is making a comeback. Or at least trying to, as several B list celebrities have been caught wearing one out of the house recently. The one-piece outfit is like a LBD and convenient for day or night… but finding one that fits is a challenge. Make sure to pick one that defines your waist and isn’t too top or bottom heavy. A looser top will enhance a small bust and wide legs can balance a full bosom.

Jumpsuits Could Actually Be A Good Idea… You Just Have To Pick The Right One

When I first spotted the return of the jumpsuit, I figured it would probably come and go as so many other ill-advised flashback trends before it. But that may not be the case. Kim Kardashian alone has been photographed wearing no fewer than three different kinds, including this flattering Black Halo jumpsuit ($390).

Kim Kardashian wearing Black Halo jumpsuit image

As demonstrated by Ms. Kardashian, you don't have to be a runway model to look good in this look. If you have curves, just beware the fitted and clingy. There are plenty of flowing, wide-leg fits available, and even more that have tummy-camouflaging elements to the tops.

Express strapless jumpsuit with tie AKA New York Flutter Drawstring jumpsuit

The color of this Express Strapless Jumpsuit ($79.50) breaks up your evening black routine. I also recommend the AKA New York Flutter Drawstring jumpsuit ($398) with its casual drawstring that helps define the waist.

Pants Too Tight Post-Holiday? Would A Waistband Stretcher Help?

image

Indulge in too many holiday treats? Is that eggnog camping out on your backside like it’s preparing to hike the K2? Don’t worry, we feel your pain. On a flight back from the holidays, we were presented with a suggested solution. From the pages of SkyMall, we bring you the Waistband Stretcher ($30).

image

The purpose of this device is to do just what it says it’s supposed to do: stretch the waistband of your clothes. You’re supposed to wet the waistband of your favorite cotton pants, throw this contraption in, and watch it add 1-5” to the garment by stretching it out. Initially, this sounds like a great idea but it doesn’t say if the waistband will regain its original dimensions. Ladies, do not torture and kill a perfectly good pair of jeans just because you couldn’t stay away from the cheesecake and martinis.

image

As we’ve said before, we (and most of Hollywood) are fans of Spanx Power Panties ($30). Spanx isn’t just for your favorite evening look, they’re a secret weapon for anytime you need to suck it in, tuck it back, and walk out of the house. Our advice is to purchase them in every color and use them liberally until you feel like your old self again.

We’re not against improvising during a wardrobe crisis but we are against ruining perfectly good clothes.

Peruse our Shapewear Guide for more ways to suck in those extra inches.

Jessica Alba Has Snatched Up The Entire West Coast Shipment Of Tolani Scarves

Apparently Jessica Alba collects more than just drooling male admirers. The red hot mama has what must amount to an entire walk-in closet full of Tolani scarves. She's been photographed in the colorful accessories just about everywhere but on the red carpet, and since we know it's not neck-chillingly cold in L.A., we have to assume these scarves are more style statement than staple.

imageimageimage
Tolani scarves marry cultural tradition with contemporary color schemes, and are affordable enough to start our own collections. Jessica's Zig Zag scarf, which she has in three colors, is only $85. So are the Honeycomb scarf she's sported around L.A., and the Waves scarf she wears when chilling with baby Honor.

But Jessica isn't the only fan of the brand. Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, Leighton Meester, Halle Berry, and Vanessa Minnillo have all been spotted out and about in Tolani, too.

Posh’s Dresses Are Getting More Popular, But No Less Fitted

Apparently, Victoria Beckham's dresses are red hot commodities, first gaining praise at NY Fashion Week and now attracting the attention of high-profile celebs. Heidi Klum was recently photographed in a V-cut fitted frock and now Madonna has shown up in a spread for W wearing another Posh creation.

imageimageimage

The dresses aren’t available online just yet, but plans to roll the highly coveted frocks out to Bergdorf Goodman and Net-a-Porter are underway. In the meantime, this Mara Hoffman Draped Back Dress ($291) as a great way to steal the classic, fitted style of her dress.

We Are Happy With A Much-Improved Oscar Red Carpet

We held out hope for a much improved red carpet through awards season, having slightly suffered through the Golden Globes and the Grammys. Thankfully, Oscar night fashion was much improved. Here are some trends from the best-dressed of the night.

imageimageimage

Return of a trend: Ball gown styling. This old Hollywood glamorous shape took on new life with Penelope Cruz looking stunning in vintage Pierre Balmain and Sarah Jessica Parker wearing Dior Haute Couture. Try out a subtle version of the trend with this Pale Yellow Dress from JS Boutique ($180).

imageimageimage

Fresh color statement: White gowns
. We cannot say how gorgeous these dresses were in refreshing shapes with such stunning details. The ladies who brought the house down in what are soon to be the best wedding styles to come were Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive and Taraji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli. Try a gorgeous white stunner to take you into warm weather with this Splendid Modal Lycra White Maxi Dress ($158.)

imageimageimage

Best returning color statement: Red on the red carpet
. Rocking the red trend in all its glory last night were Amy Adams in Carolina Herrera and Heidi Klum in RM by Roland Mouret. Every woman needs a red dress in her wardrobe and this Marc Bouwer GlamIt! Red Silk Drape Detail Strapless Dress ($267.30) is a sure-fire winner.

imageimageimage

Newest color trend: Orchid/Plum tones
. New hues of lavender and plum dresses made their way onto the carpet for a pop of romance. Looking stunning in the pretty hue were Natalie Portman in Rodarte and Alicia Keys in Armani Prive. Lighten up your own wardrobe with this T-Bags One Shoulder Grecian Dress ($215.)
