Attention, ladies: we are declaring the end of too-short, too-boxy and otherwise ill-fitting jackets and coats this winter. We are sick of seeing you in winter coats that don’t work for your shape, and you should feel the same way. Since it’s difficult to find a coat that is actually warm, but that doesn’t resemble a marshmallow, here are some options, by body type, that should work for you:

Apple:

A single-breasted style with a belt like this Ellen Tracy Belted Wool Walking Coat ($188) creates an hourglass shape like, which is perfect for apple shaped gals (thicker or wider in the mid-section).

Tall:

Lucky girl, you can wear a long coat like this luxurious Eileen Fisher Alpaca Doubleface Long Coat ($398) without being overwhelmed by all that rich, luxurious alpaca.

Pear-shaped:

As a pear-shaped girl myself, I highly recommend this Laundry by Shelli Segal Belted Down Jacket ($236.25) because I happen to own it and I love it. The fur collar balances out my bigger hips/butt and the longer hem covers my upper thighs.

Athletic:

Your boyish figure needs a girly color and style like this Kate Spade ‘Ela’ Coat ($675) that’ll cinch you in and create curves. Stay away from boxy cuts to avoid looking masculine.

Petite:

Because of your tiny stature, you can wear a bold colored short coat like this Burberry Brit Quilted Microfiber Jacket ($395). With not a lot of bulk and length, your smaller frame won’t be overwhelmed.

The brilliant writers behind Mad Men did an excellent job of recounting the Kennedy assassination on last night’s rather melancholy episode. But of course, in true Mad-fashion, even a national crisis  couldn’t stop the ladies and gents of Sterling Cooper from partying in their finest attire. Always glamorous, Betty wore a jacket with a luxurious white fur collar to the chic wedding of Roger Sterling’s daughter.

For a modern take on Draper’s fancy look, try DKNY’s fur trimmed jacket in an of-the-moment plaid or Bebe’s cropped style for dressier occasions.

Project Runway got straight down to business in Episode 2. The designers had a celebrity client to design for: supermodel and actress Rebecca Romijn, who is pregnant with twins.  Curveball!

Remember Mitchell from last week? He of the see-through dress with the great collar? As one of the few designers that had actually created maternity wear before, he decided to create a separates outfit with shorts, a t-shirt and sweater.

Great concept, bad execution (that almost sent him home).

Malvin, the conceptual ingenue, tried to create a mother hen-inspired outfit, complete with oatmeal sling and feather top. It wasn’t a bad idea, but as Nina pointed out, slings are usually reserved for after the baby is born. It was just slightly worse than Ra’Mon-Lawrence’s “bowling ball bag” formal dress, which practically screamed, I’m pregnant!

Thus, we said good-bye to Marvin.

Among the judges’ favorites was Althea’s jersey dress with the slimming criss-cross straps in back. However, her design was overshadowed by Shirin’s winning burgundy casual dress and coat. It both celebrated pregnancy curves without looking obvious.

While we’re not going to recommend a maternity dress for fall (unless you plan on seeking out one of those stomach pillows from the workroom), we do love this blousy flutter-sleeve tunic ($40) that looks great belted now, or flowy and loose if a little surprise comes your way in the future.

As an artist, you’d expect her clothing to be a little funky – maybe mixing pieces and eras to create something unique. Yes, there were some prairie skirts and flutter blouses early in the film, but as much of the action takes place in Chicago, the weather lends itself to coats and long sweater jackets. She wears them well, but I just expected more from a successful, creative woman than a standard white sweater. The cowl neck/convertible hoodie on the Alice + Olivia Wool Pom-Pom Poncho ($367) would have been a more fashionable choice for a chilly winter evening.

Where she did go right was the long winter coat topped by a Mongolian (or Persian or Tibetan) lamb fur collar. Sitting in the heat and humidity makes this sound downright treacherous, but if you’ve never experienced a Chicago winter, count yourself lucky. It’s perhaps a little early for coat shopping, but to get a similar look, your best bet is going the vintage route or trying a faux version like the Michael Kors Faux-Fur Collar Cardigan ($249.50).
