Get A Grown-Up, Screw-Up Proof Eye Look With Neutrogena Eye Quads

image

What: Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quads, $10

Why: Putting four shadow shades in one palette is a potential recipe for disaster; for every right way to create a smoldering eye look, I'm able to come up with about a dozen other combos that leave me looking like a post-match prizefighter.

Luckily, Neutrogena has those of us with multi-shade wariness covered with its line of Nourishing Eye Quads. Each disc of complementary color is clearly labeled as a base, highlighter, crease color, or accent color. I especially appreciated the lift-up label on the back with detailed, numbered illustrations.

I opted for the two-shade natural look for work, then boosted it up to a casual but dimensional look for evening by adding crease and accent shades as suggested by the pro makeup artist who provided the tips.

Bonus: The base tint has SPF 15 so your peepers are protected.

A Face-Bronzing How-To Guide (Instructional Cards Included) In A Wallet-Sized Package

image image

What: Sonia Kashuk How to Create the Bronzed Face palette, $20

Why: First of all, I weirdly enjoy the fact that this product isn’t quite grammatically correct – it’s like some heavily accented European makeup artist talking right to me. And you know she knows more than I do about making me look more attractive.

But I digress. I liked this thing, because:
1. It includes little cards with clear instructions about apply the makeup. And they’re attached to the compact, so you’d have to try really hard to lose them.
2. The colors look decent (though not like they do on the Gisele-esque cover model) on my pale-girl skin, so you can probably wear them too.
3. Three shockingly un-sticky, moisturizing lip glosses. Yay.

Step-By-Step Kits Save You Time, Money, And The Agony Of Being Pretty Sure You’re Doing It Wro

A drawer full of new spring makeup colors is pretty much useless if you can't figure out how to apply them. Below and on Better.tv, see a bunch of kits make getting it right it as easy as paint by numbers.

Plus, they make packing for trips as simple as throwing a palette into your carry-on – and they’re usually cheaper than buying all the products separately.

image image

Always confused about where to put which eyeshadow? Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quads ($10) and Avon Eye Artist Eyeshadow Trio ($6) take out the guesswork by telling you where each shade should go. Plus, you get multiple colors for a minimal price.

image

If you want to extend time between brow waxings – or will be away on vacation for a week – Tarte’s Toolbox Brow Know-How Eyebrow Kit ($18) has everything you need: tweezers, stencils, powder, wax and brow gel, all in a tiny handbag-friendly case.

image image

Moving on to lips and face, It Cosmetics’ My Naughty Mouth Set ($69) contains everything you need to make lips look plumper, teeth look whiter, and keep lip color where it should be (i.e. not in the fine lines around your mouth). For a whole-face look, just follow the illustrated instructions that come with Sonia Kashuk’s How To Create The Bronzed Face palette ($20).

image

And finally, if you’re set on shelling out for fewer bikini waxes (or just want to give someone a not-so-subtle hint with a neatly groomed arrow), the ReadyBetty Styling Kit ($15) contains cream hair remover that’s safe for your bikini line, plus stencils and scissors.

Fill Your Gym Bag With Stuff That Makes You Look Good After Sweating

Everyone who has already dropped their New Year’s resolution to get to the gym more, raise your hand. Hey, a lot of people have dropped out by now because the hassle of getting re-dressed and re-applying makeup can be a total pain. Well, we want you to reach all your goals this year, so dump out all your toiletries and pack these small, light essentials to get you from the gym to gorgeous in no time flat.

image

If your gym doesn’t have shower toiletries, take the Bliss Sinkside Six Pack ($22) into the shower with you. It has face wash, soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body butter in a package that fits into your hand.

image

A mascara eye and bold lip complements the flush in your skin after a workout. This Urban Decay Trifecta Makeup Kit ($22 ) contains eye primer, mascara, and liner to get a perfect post-workout wink.
image

Now, if you’re truly in a hurry and don’t have time to even wash your hair (and those of us who have been paged into a meeting during a sweat session know what I mean,) these Ted Gibson Hair Sheets ($17 for 10) are a godsend. Run them over your hair and hit your mane with a cool blast from the dryers provided.

image

Keep this light and travel-friendly Sedu Revolution Shortie Mini Styler ($50) at the bottom of your bag. It heats up quickly, works like a dream using tourmaline ionic plates, and best of all, comes with its own heat-resistant carrying case which doubles as a protective surface!

Here’s another trick: keep all of your toiletries in a lingerie bag like the ones you use to wash your delicates. You can hang it in the shower and it drains dry. Just place the wet bag on a towel while you’re getting ready and throw it in your gym bag when you're ready to go. You’ll never have moldy gym things again!

Check out our Guide to Cheap Workout Gear for stuff to wear to the gym that won't break your budget.

It’s A New Year, Get A New Makeup Bag Already

January is the perfect time to ditch the old stuff and revamp with some fresh new goodies. In addition to the thrill that comes with pre-spring cleaning (and the eye infection you'll save yourself from tossing that ancient mascara), it's a great way to glam up your look, no gym membership, diet or new wardrobe necessary.

image

Get the Smashbox Best of Smashbox Rapture Kit ( $19) and get three must-have basics and a screaming good deal. You'll get a mini Fusion Soft Lights shimmering powder in Dusk (neutrals), a mini Lip Enhancing Gloss in Aura (pink-ish) and a Travel Size Bionic Mascara in Jet Black.

image

To add some drama, try  MAC's Slimshine Lipstick ($14.50). It's moisturizing and sheer, but with beautiful, lasting color. I'm partial to the shade Urgent!, a pinky-red with excellent day-to-night potential.

image

Get glowing lids and cheeks with The Balm Hot Mama ($18), a pinky-peach multi-use powder that is paraben, sulfate, and phthalate-free.

image
Moisture, SPF 20, and skin-evening color in one simple step, Cosmedicine Honest Face Skin Tint and Treatment ($35) is one of the best tinted moisturizers I've tried. Serious bonus points for having a high SPF and still going on smooth and sheer.
image

For a touch of glam on the go, I stash everything away in a new Tory Burch Medium Cosmetics Case ($57). Looks amazing, and it's cheaper than a new purse!

Five Eyeshadows More Fun Than the Ones You’re Using

In my opinion, makeup should not be a tedious process of “putting on your face.” It should be fun and playful, the way it was when you were 11 years old, wearing hot pink lipstick and dousing yourself in glitter. Not that I'm suggesting you recreate that look. Only that plastic staid compacts are, well, bo-o-oring. You can do better. Here's how:
image
One end is a light-reflecting cream, the other is similar powder shade with a rollerball applicator. Whether you wear them alone or layer for dimension, the Tarte Lock and Roll Creaseless Eyeshadow Duo ($17) is like a magic (makeup) wand.

image
I've always had a soft spot for Jelly Pong Pong (even the name is fun), and their Dynamic Duo ($18) eyeshadow compacts are oh-so-satisfying. The packaging is adorable and perfectly purse-sized, and the complimentary shades give excellent sheer washes of color.

image
I am seldom excited about a product launch, but when I heard about the Smurfette collection from Too Faced, I was positively giddy. The So Smurfy Eyeshadow Collection ($32.50) is super-feminine, totally wearable and so dang cute that you'll be the envy of all your friends.

image
Shimmery, blendable and in a cool lip-gloss style tube, Girlactick Beauty Eye Glaze ($17) lets you go intergalactic planetary without donning a silver space suit. It comes in five look-great-on-everyone colors and best of all, they're easy to apply flawlessly.

image
Feeling adventurous? Bust into the Faces Sparkledust Rainbow Tower ($30). Eight sparkly, highly pigmented shades come stacked tower-style for your playing pleasure. A little intense for day, but definitely doable for evening, and the perfect way to add low-cost drama to your look.

Earn Extra Cash By Batting Your Eyelashes

image

You might have a chance to earn some extra cash for the holidays with a mere wink. Feelunique.com , a UK beauty site, is hiring models to wear a transfer of their URL on their eyelids. They pay 10 pence per wink, up to a total of £100 per model (approx. $155 dollars). The transfer is temporary but the cash is real for as long as you can keep it in your pocket.

Umm, so this is kind of creepy if you ask us. Can you imagine sitting across a table from someone who had an advertisement on their eye? Could you actually see it behind long lashes?  If you try to tell them that their eye makeup is a little smudged and they tell you they're moonlighting as a billboard, do you congratulate their entrepreneurial spirit or hand them a Q-tip?

image

If this appeals to you, you’re obviously going to need some eye makeup remover to take the transfer off after they’ve paid you the mad money.  The mainstay on our dressers is Lancôme Effacil Gentle Eye Makeup Remover ($26), which gently lifts eye makeup and dirt from your gorgeous peepers without stinging or causing any damage.

After all, if you’re going to make money off your eyes, you have to protect your investment.

Urban Decay Would Be The Perfect Gift For Your Uptight Mother-In-Law

Do you secretly wish you were just a smidge edgier? Check out my new favorite finds from Urban Decay for some sinfully hot new beauty products that will bring out the rock rebel in you this holiday season. Or give to someone else who needs a little loosening up.

image

Their Limited Edition Lipstick Cap ($15) will really get tongues wagging at the holiday party.  The gorgeous case looks like a Gothic tinted window and can house any of the Urban Decay Lipsticks ($22).

image

Looking to kiss someone before the night is over?  Don’t worry about heading to the bathroom. This Stoned Poison Ring ($50) opens up to house any one of three universal shades contained in the bottom drawer of its ring box.  Just pop one in and lacquer up before your close-up.

image

If you or someone you love has a thing for eyeliner (who doesn’t?), the 24/7 Travel Sized Sets of Five ($29) are perfect purse stashers for nights out.

image

Long nights used to smudge your eye makeup but no more! Award-winning Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($16) goes on smoothly under eyeshadow and keeps eyes looking smooth and crease-free. Plus, the shadow stays put until you say so.

Don’t let the attitude fool you. Urban Decay doesn’t test on animals so you can use the products without fear.  Take these little gems with you this holiday season and turn up the volume on your makeup routine.

And check out our Invitation Translation Guide for what to wear with your festive new makeup palette.

Look More Awake Than You Feel With Too Faced Brightening Pencil

Too Faced's Eye Brightening Pencil

What: Too Faced Mineral Eye Brightening Pencil, $18

Why: Apparently I’m the last woman on Earth to find out that a pink-toned cover-up is best for disguising under-eye circles. But just in case I’m not, I’m sharing my new discovery: Too Faced Mineral Eye Brightening Pencil ($18).

Made with mineral water, this eye brightening pencil refreshes the skin around your eyes while hiding dark circles and reducing puffiness. It’s a combination that instantly makes you look like you did get those eight hours of beauty sleep last night. It blended easily into my skin and the rest of my foundation, and didn't cause my eyeliner to slide either.

Angie’s Cartoonish Red Lips Give A Stellar Performance In The Changeling….She Does Okay Too

image

The arrival of Angelina Jolie’s new movie, The Changeling, coincides perfectly with fall’s return to the ladylike glamour of the first half of the first half of the 20th century. We’ve talked about the style, but what about beauty trends from that time? Looking to add a little retro glam to your wardrobe?  Read on…

image

This is when red lipstick had its major fashion moment. Viewers have said that it’s a tad distracting on Jolie onscreen (why would painting an already pronounced pucker fire engine red and then blowing it up to the size of a car be distracting?), but the colored lip is a very hot trend for the holidays. A universally flattering red is M.A.C. Cosmetics Lipstick in Russian Red ($14) and it really does look great on all skin tones.

image

Cake liner is the retro way to get that doe-eyed look. Designed to give a pronounced look when applied with a wet brush, Make Up For Ever Eyeliner Cake in Black 1 ($16) will give you a very vogue cat eye.  Steady your elbow on a table or the wall next to a mirror if you don’t have a steady hand.

Drugstore Find: Wet ‘N’ Wild Eyeshadow Trio Is Amazing (We Promise No Glitter)

Three dollars can buy you coffee. Three dollars can buy you a doughnut.

Or three dollars can buy you a fabulous eyeshadow trio from the drugstore.

image

What: MegaEyes from Wet ‘N’ Wild, $3

Why:  I remember Wet ‘N’ Wild from high school, mostly for its sparkly purple nail polish, which is still all over the floor in the bathroom I grew up sharing with my brother. However, somewhere along the way, the brand has morphed into an underrated line with products worth way more than their price tags. I’ve raved about the #666 lipliner in the past (the only one you’ll never need), and these trios are just as spectacular.

There are six trios in the line, each with coordinating light-to-dark colors: Belgian Chocolates, Amazon Greens (an especial favorite), Mojave Mauves, Venetian Violets, Island Blues, and Egyptian Sands.

They’re perfect for weekdays – rock the lighter shades at work, and use the darkest color to amp up the look for a night out.
