Double Duty: Stealthy Makeup Multi-Taskers

While the products below aren't billed as multitaskers, we think they work beautifully at adding some glow on the go – and saving a bit of much-needed space in your evening bag.

image

What: Sue Devitt Gel-to-Powder Blush in North Cape ($20)
Why: This warm, shimmery gel spreads easily and blends in well, so it’s tough to over-apply.
Use it for: Cheeks and eyes

image

What: Bobbi Brown Matte Stain for Lips in Cayenne ($20)
Why: The formula has the consistency of a creamy lipstick, but on cheeks it’s translucent enough to give a natural-looking flush, like you just came from a workout.
Use it for: Lips and cheeks

Beauty Trend: A Trip to the Eye-lands With Tropical Aqua Colors

imageimage

If the crummy winter weather has you thinking of gloomy grays and slushy browns, you need to look to the perpetually sunny islands for some pick-me-up makeup inspiration. Rhianna and Ugly Betty's Becki Newton have both rocked the tropical vibe on the red carpet, with shimmering emerald shadow and sparkly lagoon-blue liner, respectively. Here are our picks for can't-miss aqua eyes:

image
Most Luxurious:
Shiseido's Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow in Green Exotique ($23) goes on silky smooth and dries without creasing. The effect of this buttery créme shadow is subtle at first, but gets bolder as you add layers. The opalescent greenish-blue hue catches the light beautifully, making your eyes look wide and bright.

image
Most User-Friendly:
It's ok to be a little leery of swabbing on a swath of jewel-toned color — we all remember the '80s, and those eye shadow trends were not good. But with Black Radiance's Shadow Créme in Ocean or Jewel ($2.50), you're in total control. The lip gloss-like applicator wand is long and tapered, so the cream shadow goes only where you want it to. And the colors — lush green Ocean or cobalt blue Jewel — are a far cry from the powder blues of the '80s.

image
Most Versatile: VonNatur's Natural Minerals Eye Color in Lapis ($16) has everything going for it. Apply the gold-hued blue dry for a subtle sheen, or add water for a more dramatic nighttime look. You can even break out the eyeliner brush to add just a hint of the moistened powder to your lids. The vegan and sun-friendly loose powder formula is packed with metallic minerals like mica, so the color is potent enough to really make a statement.

Remember: no matter how far you take your aqua eyes, be sure to pair this look with minimal makeup to avoid looking too campy. A peachy blush and nude gloss should do the trick without upstaging your island-ready eyes. Did we miss your favorite beachy-keen eye color? Let us know all about it in the comments section.

Would You Or Wouldn’t You? Sticking It To Shadow Mishaps

image

Time to own up: we've all had a disastrous smokey-eye mishap. One slip of the pencil, one overzealous sweep of dark shadow, or one shake of the too-inky liquid liner, and we end up looking like pandas or prize fighters. We've tried all the fancy tools and followed all the pro-generated tips, but the perfect smokey eye still eludes. We covet the seemingly effortless looks of our favorite dramatically made-up starlets and wish for our own personal makeup artists to give us flawless, smoldering eyes whenever the mood strikes.

Well, help may have arrived in the form of ColorOn Instant Eye Shadow Applicators – handy little shadow stickers with all that smokey eye goodness built right in. These one-use shadow patches come in an array of colors and patterns, from simple gold-hued and silver-hued definers to daringly bright jewel tones to funky leopard and camo prints. Simply line the applicators up with your lash line, press, and peel. Voila! A professional-quality eye makeup job.

But can it really be that easy? Doesn't everyone have differently shaped eyes? Would I end up with, say, zebra stripes above my eyebrows if I didn't apply the shadow absolutely perfectly? And who would want camo-print eyes, anyway?

These stickers will set you back a pretty penny. A five-pair pack costs $20 (that's $4 a wear, if you're keeping track), while a good solid shadow palette you'll use for months can cost less. So are these babies worth it? Let us know what you think in the comments section.

And check out other SheFinds ways to achieve that sexy smokey eye.

Beauty Find: MAC Goes Old School

What: MAC Cosmetics' Originals Collection

Why: MAC Cosmetics is no newbie to the beauty game; they've been around the block, and some of their products have been there through it all. The Originals Collection is a tribute to some of MAC's most popular products, both from existing lines and discontinued products. Included in the new line are lipsticks, lipglass, eye shadows ,and Pigments featuring new textures and modified formulas. You'll want to check out the Nouveau Frou Lipstick ($14), a beige-y pink with white pearl that achieves nude lip perfection, as well as Tinted Lipglass ($14) in Nico Now, a personal favorite that's a mid-tone grey purple with multicoloured pearl.

Don't let your lips have all the fun, your eye will dazzle with Ochre Style Eye Shadow ($14), a mid-tone yellow brown with gold and shine with Pigment ($19.50) in Kitschmas a gorgeous light airy shimmering pink/mauve pear. They've also announced four different face palettes to go with the collection. Each look centers around the foundations of the collection and uses color in a playful and funky way.

Full on Lust is a great take on color with some flashbacks to 80's glam. MAC's Originals Collection will be available throughout January.

Beauty Bargain: Neutrogena Shimmer Sheers

image When it comes to makeup, I ooh and ah over every smoky eye and contoured cheekbone. Then I wake up late for work and barely have time to put on shoes, let alone carefully craft a beautiful face. That's why I love my Neutrogena Shimmer Sheers so much. It's equally useful as eyeshadow, blush and gloss, and I can slick it on with a finger in between subway stops.

The finish is lightly powdery without feeling cakey, which is crucial for my sensitive skin. And the bronze color "Mystified" adds just enough color that people at the office say, "You're looking nice!" rather than, "Do you have malaria?" For less than ten dollars to perk up my whole face, this is a bargain I plan on keeping in my purse for a long time.

Price: Originally $9, now on sale for $8.

What To Wear For New Year’s Eve: New York City

It’s time for the biggest party of the year, and where better to belt out than New York City, the chicest place in the world? Since Gotham's both the birthplace of disco and home to the famous Studio 54, get your groove on with a look reminiscent of the glamorous nights of yesteryear.

1.  Channel your inner Edie Sedgewick with Nanette Lepore’s sequined block dress ($465). Gold sequined panels and a retro mod shape make this dress a standout at any party.

image

2. Kenneth Jay Lane Disco Ball Ring ($98) is perfect for the occasion. It’s glitzy, fun, and will keep sparkling long after you put away your dancing shoes. If you can’t watch the ball drop, why not bring it along with you.

image

3.  A clutch is a must for a night on the town, so be sure yours stands out. Sang A’s silver clutch ($509) will make a statement without saying a word. The Target silver clutch ($12.99) is another alternative – super chic but not as pricey.

image

4.  Need a quick spritz before your midnight kiss? Bond No. 9 pocket sprays are compact enough to fit anywhere and will keep you smelling fresh throughout the night.  The New York Crystal Set ($220) comes with 3 fragrances, appropriately named Chinatown, Chelsea Flowers, and Eau de New York. An elegant Swarovski crystal flacon is included in the set.

image

5. Accentuate your disco diva style with daring eyeliner and faux lashes. Smashbox’s Smudgepot ($18) is perfect for creating the coveted smoky eye effect and will look smashing paired with Sephora’s lashes ($14)

imageimage

Complete the look with black tights and dramatic black shoes – the higher the better. Then get ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple followed by plenty of bubbly.

It’s Stil-A Mystery: 70 Percent Off Cosmetics, Coming Soon?

What:  Virtual Warehouse Sale at Stila Cosmetics.

What to do: The amazing cosmetics company, Stila, is offering up to 70% off some of its makeup in a 'secret sale’ available only to email subscribers.  Unfortunately, mum’s the word, and they’re not saying when the sale begins. In order to be informed, you have to go to their website and register for their email list. Then you’ll be sent a link to all the details when the sale goes live. While you’re on the site, take a gander at some of my favorite products. I’m hoping they’ll make the cut when the big day finally arrives.

1. Smoky Eye Palettes ($40) – Stila makes these unbelievable smoky eye palettes that literally talk you through creating the perfect smoky eye. Since I usually end up resembling Rocky Raccoon when I attempt this feat alone, a step by step kit is a dream come true. The pack includes four shades of shadow, and a button to push that explains which color to apply first, and which brushes to use. Palettes are available in original smoke, bronze, and emerald.

image

2.  Gift of Glow Bronzing Set ($45) – This mini pack of sunshine includes sun bronzer, eye shadow, lip glaze, smudge pot, and an eyeliner brush. It’s guaranteed to brighten up the dreariest of complexions.

image

3. Sparkling Glitter Eyeliner ($18) – Unless I’m off to an 80’s theme party, I’m generally not a fan of sparkly makeup. But this glitter liner can be applied in a narrow, delicate line that will put a discreet and playful twinkle in your eye.

image

So get going and sign up at Stila. You're virtually guaranteed a good deal in the days to come.

How Much Makeup Do You Need? Only The Essentials

image

What: Artistry Essentials Makeup Kit, $59

Why: Let me tell you a story: It starts with a 24-hour stomach virus and ends with a sleep-deprived girl trying to save her Saturday night. (I'll spare you the details in between.) This happened to me last weekend, but with killer dinner reservations and reliable baby sitter already scheduled, I wasn't about to let a little exhaustion get in the way of my night on the town.

But no matter how much caffeine I chugged, my face still told the story of my sleepless night. The bags under my eyes looked especially viscious. So I whipped out the Artistry Essentials kit I'd received the day before and decided to put the products to the ultimate test.

Now the brains behind this mineral brand say their aim is to help a woman pare down her makeup to a limited amount of well-made products. This kit (the items will be sold separately starting in January) includes concealer, powder foundation, eyeshadow, blush, mascara, and lip gloss. So I followed their step-by-step instructions included in a booklet, and, with ten mintues to go, tried to do something to improve my situation.

Amazingly, it worked. I was shocked, but I actually looked well-rested and ready to go. And, despite the concealer being heavy enough to really camouflage the Birkin bags hanging under my eyes, my skin still looked fresh. So you can now count me amongst the converted. This handy kit now serves as my travel essentials thanks to its compact size, and the concealer especially hasn't left my side since. Now if only these geniuses could figure out a way to make me feel as good as I look…any ideas?

Pack All The Beauty Supplies You Need, Still Have Space For Shoes

Thanksgiving Week hs started, which means trying to slam beauty routines into a suitcase, get a few essentials past security, and still look good upon arrival. Here are some airport-friendly finds you can't travel without:

image

1. Slide right through security with the Bliss Sinkside Six-Pack ($25), a set of travel-sized favorites based on the often-pilfered sets in the W Hotel bathrooms. Each set comes complete with 1 oz. sized containers of their Lemon + Sage line: Soapy Sap, Shampoo, Conditioning Rinse, a Soap Slab, Body Butter, and their Fabulous Foaming Face Wash all in a clear, reusable travel bag.

image

2. Traveling means simplifying, which means products have to pull some overtime. Examples? Try using a gloss as blush and dabbing some sparkling eyeshadow on the center of the lips to give them a little snap. This Too Faced Glamour To Go palette ($18.50) has four shadows and six glosses–all you need to get off the plane looking as pretty as you did when you boarded.

image

3. A little mascara makes all the difference, and we've found a travel size that’s pretty hard to forget. Bourjois Mini Volume Glamour Ultra Black Mascara ($8) not only pumps a lot of lash for its petite size, but you can also clip it to your cell phone so it’s readily accessible.

image

4. Ugh, who hasn’t experienced “travel head” due to plane pillows, car seats, or other travel hazards? No need to fret. Pack some Ted Gibson Hair Sheets ($25 for a pack of ten) in your carry-on or handbag to smooth flyaways and frizz quickly.

imageimage

Last but not least, you have to have a dazzling smile. Pack a GoSmile Jet Set Kit ($12), which contains A.M. and P.M. formulas of their whitening, ultra-polishing toothpaste. Can’t get to a sink? Crack an ampule from your Touch Up Refillable Compact Mint-licious On-The-Go Smile Refresher ($29) anywhere, anytime for a great smile.

Need some luggage for your trip? We've got the best picks for chic travelers!
