Guy Friday: The Series Your Man Will Love

flightofconcordscover

What: Flight of the Concords – The Complete Second Season, $19.99

Why: The Flight of the Concords may be the best series you or your guy have never seen.  Set in New York City, the show is centered around 2 musicians from New Zealand who are trying to find success while dealing with an obsessive fan (they only have one), a less than successful (but hysterically funny) band manager, and the general trials and tribulations of living in a new city with no money and huge dreams.  Within each thirty-minute episode you’ll find musical numbers that border on hallucinogenic but are ultimately incredibly creative and clever.  Flight of the Concords – The Complete Second Season is the perfect excuse to spend some extra couch time with your man.

Bonus: Flight of the Concords – The Complete First Season is a bit less expensive and worth watching first if you have the time.

Want to dress like a fashionable musician from New Zealand?  We’d recommend a cheap scarf, a pair of skinny jeans, and a denim jacket.

So Thanks To Bruno, Guys Don’t Like Hair

Today The New York Times attempts to make an interesting case on the topic of men’s beauty.  The paper claims that an era of hairlessness (on more than just the face) is being ushered in among guys in college through their mid-thirties thanks to causes ranging from Gilette ads to Nivea to Brüno.

In case your guy wants to make like that slick-haired dude at your gym, we suggest keeping hair removal products around that he’ll think are meant for you, but in truth, both of you can (and will) definitely use.

schick

These Schick disposables are not particularly feminine-looking, they last longer than most throwaway razors, and are only $8 for a pack of four.  Keep a package around for you, but don’t get mad when your man raids the stash.

philosophy

Also important to this newly-shaven boyfriend movement is a shaving cream that doesn’t scream “groooooming!”  Get something that works for you but comes off being gender-neutral, like Philosophy’s shaving cream ($18).

nono-black

We may have already noted the no!no! in our post on DIY lasers, but seriously, this FDA-approved device is so painless and easy to use, it deserves a second mention.  Get one in black ($250) that you’ll love and your guy will feel totally comfortable using, too.

vitaminserum_lrg

Packed with vitamins, it’s highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Smart, John.

Guy Friday: A Dress Shirt That Puts My Others To Shame

5630012wb_md

What: Hickey Freeman Blue Royal Oxford Dress Shirt, $175

Why: On a recent trip out in New York City, I stopped into the Hickey Freeman store and found the perfect dress shirt. Why was it perfect?  First of all,  the color is absolutely fantastic – a cool version of blue that will go with just about any suit jacket. The fit is incredibly comfortable, and the quality is off the charts.

But it’s that color that keeps drawing me back in when I open my closet door.

Buy Him Push-Up Undies, And He’ll Always Be Happy To See You

image

What:
Roland Lodoli’s Push-Up Underpants

Why: We females already know the appeal of using a little architecture to keep ourselves looking our absolute best. Now a Croatian designer is giving men the same opportunity. Lodoli’s Wonderbra-inspired creation contains a small pocket inside that is designed to lift a man’s “goods” in order to make them look more impressive.

My first instinct is that this is super weird. However, since a good push-up bra can provide a healthy dose of confidence for us, shouldn’t men be entitled to the same thing? Would you be okay with your man wearing these? I’m mostly just upset that Lodoli didn’t give his product the most obvious, awesome name ever: WonderPants.

Right now these babies are not sold online, so unless your honey has
recently traveled to Croatia there isn’t much chance of this coming up (pun intended)
in real life, at least for now.

Guy Friday: John Varvatos Wants Men To Smell Nice, Not Sweaty, When Warm Weather Finally Hits

image

What: John Varvatos Artisan Fragrance , $75

Why: February is nearly behind us, which means spring is almost (and finally) here. Help your guy get ready for the warmer weather with the new Artisan fragrance from John Varvatos. I sensed a strong citrus scent after the first spritz, but with woodsy undertones, so I didn't smell like a Glade air freshener. And in typical John Varvatos fashion, it’s all about the details. The fragrance flask is housed in hand-woven rattan making it a smart addition to my bathroom display.

Guy Friday: Help Your Man Get A Job By Making Him Look Presentable

With 11.1 million people unemployed, it’s safe to say that making a positive, memorable impression during an interview is even more essential today. So we have five, recession-friendly (inexpensive) style tips to help your guy look more polished when he walks into the room to meet his future boss.

image

Black or brown shoes? The Nordstrom Reversible Leather Belt ($49.50) will allow him to match either pair. It’s two belts in one!

image

Speaking of shoes, use the Kiwi Shoe Shine Sponge ($4.75) if there’s no time for a proper polish.

image

Keep those collars crisp and in place with Macy’s Brass Collar Stays ($18).

image

If your guy is over 30, it’s time to have “the talk”—clip that nasty nose and ear hair with the Target Nose & Ear Trimmer ($10).
image

Interview lunch? Bring along some old school Binaca ($11) – it refreshes instantly and discreetly.

And one final suggestion, bring the suit and shirt to an experienced tailor to ensure they properly fit. Many off-the-rack clothes need to be tweaked here and there to make them look like they were made for him. Good luck!

Guy Friday: Men’s Jewelry – Less Is More Unless You Idolize Tony Soprano

image

What: Titanium & Black Cable Dog Tag Chain, $149

Why: Jewelry for men is one of those taboo topics rarely uttered in mixed company. I mean, even the phrase conjures images of Tony Soprano and his entourage. So I’m a strong believer in less is so much more—both in the amount of jewelry worn and the design.

If you’re looking for that special Valentine’s Day gift, chains (men don’t wear “necklaces”) have become popular again and we love the Titanium & Black Cable Dog Tag Chain from Zales. The simple, modern design is sophisticated with a bit of edge. Other types of jewelry we think are acceptable include brushed metal watches, cuff links with personality, and tie bars (although these may be a bit too trendy for some guys).

There are a few items we do not encourage you to pursue. Unless it’s a wedding band, rings are too difficult for men to pull off because most are so gaudy. Dare I even have to say that the chance to wear an earring has long passed for him. At lastly, the bracelet – no matter how thin and understated it may seem  – absolutely not.

Receive free shipping on this chain as well as any order over $149 from Zales.com.

Guy Friday: Resolve To Smell Good This Year

Guys and cologne are an interesting combination. Whenever I buy cologne, the goal is to find a personal connection with the smell. Ii don't want the smell to be overbearing, but at the same time it's a great feeling when a complete stranger passes by and twirls around as to keep your air around just a bit longer.  As you walk through the men's cologne aisle looking for that perfect scent for your man, be sure to sample some of the great scents below:

image

Davidoff Adventure ($33.33) can best be described as woody and earthy with a great subtle clean smell that is perfect for everyday use at work.

image

There is a great consistent sweet/fresh smell amongst the diesel products (cologne, aftershave, lotions) that I just love. This Diesel Limited Edition Gift Set ($65.50) will keep your guy smelling great both day and night.

image

I finished this bottle of Ed Hardy's Men Fragrance ($75) quickly. It's become one of my faves for going out at night – a great combination of citrus, sage and sensual musks. A must smell.

Guy Friday: The Tumi T-Tech Adventure Is Sleek, Professional, And Incredibly Comfortable

image

What: Tumi T-Tech Adventure Computer Backpack, $250

Why:  As a New Yorker without a car, I find myself carrying things all the time. It's pretty much been that way since I was a kid in elementary school. But now that I am grown up, I need a grown up travel bag. Recently, Tumi has introduced their new line of backpacks called the T-Tech Adventure. This bag is perfect for the man who needs to carry things to the office and to the gym. The T-Tech Adventure is incredibly comfortable when carrying many items and does a great job of distributing weight to avoid back and shoulder injury. It has a separate space for a laptop and another huge space for folders, gym clothes, shoes, etc.  There are many small pockets to carry items along with small zippered pouches along the straps of the bag – perfect to keep keys or an iPod. This backpack is stylish (I went with black), well-made, and apparently on trend

Guy Friday: Yes, Patchouli Has Returned Thanks To Le Labo

image

What: Le Labo Patchouli 24, $52

Why:
We know what you’re thinking….patchouli? But Le Labo Patchouli 24 won’t make your guy smell like the Haight-Ashbury. The smoky, leathery character of birch with a touch of vanilla is unique and sexy and unlike any cologne we’ve ever tried. And what makes Le Labo even more special is you can personalize the bottle by adding a name on the label. “A scent filled with danger for those of us who like to walk a tight rope.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
