With fall in full swing, I’m no stranger to wearing tights regularly—but hosiery for our arms? That’s something I’ve yet to consider.

According to the London Evening Standard, “A recent survey found that 75 per cent of women hated their upper arms more than any other part of their body,” making the case for Armery, which is apparently “flying off the shelves” at UK stores like Debenhams.

Not only is the garment meant to cover up the upper arms—but it’s also meant to shape and tone them, much like traditional shapewear.

Designed by Mary Portas and wife Melanie Rickey, the arm hosiery retails for £17.50 (just under $30) a pair and comes in solid, opaque, and translucent designs.

But after wearing them at countless appearances since, we’ve decided this is no accident. Sheer pantyhose seem to be as integral to Kate’s daily routine as perfume or deodorant.

Call us crazy bare-legged bohemians, but we’re still having trouble accepting the pantyhose thing as a viable trend for the under-60 set. But if you think you can pull it off, God bless you: check out the collection of sheer hosiery at Bare Necessities.

$500 dollar socks have become a reality, folks, and you can thank Rodarte for that. Despite their Juarez makeup fiasco, we love Rodarte, but we just can’t wrap our heads around this one. Not only are these ugly socks rather hole-y, but they are non-washable (spot clean only), too. No wonder so many New Yorkers have deemed them ridiculous. I am a complete black tights fiend, which should be a surprise to exactly no one, being that I live in New York and wear almost exclusively dresses.

Being an at least mildly logical individual, I had the presence of mind not to wear my compressive shaping tights to Thanksgiving last year – but I did wear another pair of beloved black tights, and to be honest, the elastic, digs-into-your-hip waistband was almost worse.

The tugging and pinching and trying to hike them up or roll them down so they wouldn’t hurt during dessert (I know, but it was Thanksgiving!) was enough to make me want to spend the next year’s dinner in sweatpants.

Thankfully, I just got this pair of Hanes Opaque Tights, and I’ve worn them with almost absurdly frequency since they arrived. In fact, I’m wearing them right now, and eating roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta. And they’re still comfortable.

I got the tights in my normal size, but a holiday-friendly tip: If you want a comfy, high-waisted fit and a super-opaque leg, order a size up.

And have a comfortable holiday.

So we’re all for funky, patterned hosiery (after all, we were beside ourselves with glee when Gerbe’s polka dot stockings made a comeback this fall) but these Twitter-inspired tights by the designer Gaby are just plain icky. People spend years trying to rid themselves of the ugly tattoos they ended up with after a crazy night in Vegas, so why would you willingly wear hideous tattoo-like designs all over your legs? Twitter has officially been taken one step too far.

For some slightly classier stockings, we suggest these elegant tights from Wolford (arguably the best of the best in hosiery) or HUE’s comfy basketweave style. Or simply peruse our guides to the best in hosiery and while you’re at it, some high heeled boots to go with them.

While your first inclination may be to pick out leg warmers in some crazy hue, resist the temptation. Go for a textured black or dark gray pair and slip them on over super opaque tights. There’s no way you’ll be mistaken for Madonna in the early years if you wear some heavy duty riding boots. Remember you’re going for an effortlessly chic look, so make sure your leg warmers stick out the tops and are properly scrunched. As for above the knees, we suggest a simple smocked skirt and loose fitting blouse that’s elegant enough to dress up the look.
