Stila Makeup Player: Makeup Lesson + iPod Speakers + Travel Case = Generally Cool Thing

stila makeup player

What: Stila Makeup Player, $70

Why: Inside this grown-up Kaboodle (it’s a really good size for travel – I’d stuff my lingerie in the bottom part, makeup in the top), you’ll find five Stila products in your shade, a mirror…and an mp3 dock.

It’s cool because:

  1. You can play makeup lesson videos from Stila on your mp3 player (it works with iPhones, BlackBerrys, and others), which sits right in front of the mirror; look down at the lesson, look up at your face, expertly apply makeup, repeat.
  2. Extra makeup lesson videos are free to download at StilaBeautyTube.com, starting November 1.
  3. The built-in speakers that play your makeup lesson also play everything else on your device. Hello, traveling party.
  4. Five products (lip gloss, eyeshadow trio, shadow brush, lip and cheek tint, and Stila’s new foundation) and iPod speakers for $70 is kind of a deal.

Get Yours: Pre-order at StilaBeautyTube.com – the site launches in full November 1.

Round out the products in your Makeup Player with our picks for the best mascaras, best eye creams, and best travel beauty items.

Help Your Lips Hide From The Sun (Because They Hate Wrinkles As Much As Your Face Does)

Lip gloss addicts take note— unless your gloss has SPF, you’re not protecting your lips from wrinkles. Just like the skin on your face or hands, your lips are sensitive and can get wrinkly from sun exposure or even develop skin cancer.

Scary, right? Make sure you’re protecting your pucker with these three shiny SPF lip glosses.

1. Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother SPF 20 ($7)

Developed by dermatologists, this gloss combines broad-spectrum UV protection and shiny, fun colors.

2. Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 ($14)

This hydrating gloss protects and shimmers in colors from sheer to opaque. So you get protection along with sexy shine.

3. Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15 ($17)

Made with olive oil, this simple balm protects lips and keeps them smooth. Plus, the silver tin is ideal for toting around.

And check out our Lip Balms Guide for more ways to keep your lips protected no matter the season.

A Face-Bronzing How-To Guide (Instructional Cards Included) In A Wallet-Sized Package

image image

What: Sonia Kashuk How to Create the Bronzed Face palette, $20

Why: First of all, I weirdly enjoy the fact that this product isn’t quite grammatically correct – it’s like some heavily accented European makeup artist talking right to me. And you know she knows more than I do about making me look more attractive.

But I digress. I liked this thing, because:
1. It includes little cards with clear instructions about apply the makeup. And they’re attached to the compact, so you’d have to try really hard to lose them.
2. The colors look decent (though not like they do on the Gisele-esque cover model) on my pale-girl skin, so you can probably wear them too.
3. Three shockingly un-sticky, moisturizing lip glosses. Yay.

My Naughty Mouth: No, Not A Kinky Board Game… Just Makeup To Make Your Lips Look Good

Naughty Mouth Kit

What: It Cosmetics My Naughty Mouth Kit, $69

Why: I’m no Angelina Jolie. I don’t have six kids, Brad Pitt, or pillowy lips. So I wasn’t optimistic that this step-by-step kit of lip products would change my pout. It comes with a palette of nine lipstick shades, a dual lip pencil for highlighting and shading, two shimmery glosses, a handy dual brush, and two blue-based lip balms that make smiles look whiter.

When I opened the box, my first thought was that it seemed like a lot of effort without much promise of payoff. But thanks to the easy-to-follow diagrams of how to apply every product, my lips do look fuller. I’m still not Angelina, but I’m a little closer… and a little later for work.

Step-By-Step Kits Save You Time, Money, And The Agony Of Being Pretty Sure You’re Doing It Wro

A drawer full of new spring makeup colors is pretty much useless if you can't figure out how to apply them. Below and on Better.tv, see a bunch of kits make getting it right it as easy as paint by numbers.

Plus, they make packing for trips as simple as throwing a palette into your carry-on – and they’re usually cheaper than buying all the products separately.

Always confused about where to put which eyeshadow? Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quads ($10) and Avon Eye Artist Eyeshadow Trio ($6) take out the guesswork by telling you where each shade should go. Plus, you get multiple colors for a minimal price.

If you want to extend time between brow waxings – or will be away on vacation for a week – Tarte’s Toolbox Brow Know-How Eyebrow Kit ($18) has everything you need: tweezers, stencils, powder, wax and brow gel, all in a tiny handbag-friendly case.

image image

Moving on to lips and face, It Cosmetics’ My Naughty Mouth Set ($69) contains everything you need to make lips look plumper, teeth look whiter, and keep lip color where it should be (i.e. not in the fine lines around your mouth). For a whole-face look, just follow the illustrated instructions that come with Sonia Kashuk’s How To Create The Bronzed Face palette ($20).

And finally, if you’re set on shelling out for fewer bikini waxes (or just want to give someone a not-so-subtle hint with a neatly groomed arrow), the ReadyBetty Styling Kit ($15) contains cream hair remover that’s safe for your bikini line, plus stencils and scissors.

Who Knew A Ball Of Gloss Could Do So Much…For My Sanity

Ballmania Serenlipity Lip Tint SPF-15

What: Ballmania Serenlipity Lip Tint SPF-15, $12.50

Why: I, like most fashion lovers, crave huge, bottomless handbags. And because I like to carry my kitchen sink around with me, I’m often digging through—and swearing at—my purse to find my lip gloss.

Ballmania’s Serenlipity Lip Tint has given me back part of my sanity. The cute, round container is easy to identify by touch so I don’t have to spend precious minutes scanning my bag’s contents, features a handy mirror, and also doubles as a chic stress ball (just kidding…not really). I’ve been toting around Glisten Here Missy, a flattering sheer bronze shimmer with SPF 15 that tastes spicy to boot.

Drugstore Beauty: Forget Chanel, I’ll Take The $6 Neutrogena

Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss lip gloss

What: Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss, $6.50

Why: I have a weakness for Chanel lip glosses, but they don't exactly fit into my recession budget. On a search for a more affordable replacement, I found this shiny pink gloss from Neutrogena. It goes on smooth, leaves a hint of color, and stays put. Unlike other cheap glosses, it doesn't get sticky and actually moisturizes my lips too, leaving them soft and healthy looking. It also has a light, soft citrusy scent that is sure to perk you up.

Want To Glow Like Jen And Kate? Oscar’s Makeup Artist Says Great (Or Great Looking) Skin Is The Key

image image image

We had the pleasure of interviewing Emmy-nominated makeup artist Bruce Grayson yesterday – the one who ran the backstage goings-on at the Academy Awards (21 makeup artists! 19 hairdressers!) – and he let us in on how we mere mortals can get looks like the ones we saw on Sunday.

Bruce’s advice for getting red carpet glam at home is the same advice he gives the celebrities: it all starts with great skin. Getting your skin in shape weeks in advance is the key to looking as amazing as possible: facials, microdermabrasion, whatever it takes.

Bruce said he swears by Olay Definity Color Recaputre ($21) and Laura Mercier Secret Concealer ($22) to even skin tones and make skin look just flawless.

Bruce’s picks for best makeup on Oscar night? Jennifer Aniston’s look was one of his favorites, with the star going a little more glam than usual but still showing gorgeous, translucent skin and makeup. Other favorites included Kate Winslet’s pale beigy pink eye with a dramatic lip and Viola Davis’s gorgeous mauve-y purple lips.

“Oscars is about sheer simplicity," Bruce says. "It focuses on the eyes or the lips or the skin.”

image image image

As far as other makeup bag staples, he adores Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara ($7.65) and Cargo Blu-Ray Blush/Highlighter ($27). When it comes to lips, Bruce is mad for the new lip gloss/lipstick combination products that go on easy and leave lasting color with shine – one of his favorites right now is MAC Tinted Lipglass ($14).

Whether or not you include the red carpet and HDTV lighting is entirely up to you.
