Sophie Theallet Is The Newest CFDA Fashion Fund Winner (And A Michelle Obama Fave)

sophie thealletMichelle Obama in Sophie Theallet

Brooklyn-based, French designer Sophie Theallet was awarded this year’s CFDA Fashion Fund grant of $200,000, Vogue reports.  Theallet is already a favorite of Michelle Obama’s (that’s her shirtdress the ahead-of-the-curve First Lady donned last spring).

With the advent of this grant, one thing we’re rooting for is seeing Theallet’s clothing online (right now you’ll have to visit your local, physical outpost of Barney’s).  In the meantime, cop the look with a pretty, feminine shirtdress, like this one from Ann Taylor.  You can pair it with this Alexander Wang blazer – Wang was last year’s CFDA award recipient, and he’s since become practically ubiquitous.

Michelle Salutes Our Soldiers In J. Crew Tweed

Michelle Obama on Veterans' Dayjcrew mint tweed griffin coat

Michelle Obama certainly brightened up a drab Veteran’s Day in Washington – she wore this eye-catching, J.Crew tweed coat today for a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. It’s no secret that the First Lady has a soft spot for the prepster brand – she’s made many an appearance in a J.Crew frock – but we like how she jazzes up the ensemble with a contrasting black belt and ultra-opaque tights under her rain boots. According to Mrs-O.org, this particular jacket hasn’t been around since January, but luckily, their new tweed “griffin” coat is just as cute.

For a slightly funkier, equally colorful look, try Boden’s plaid tweed jacket or some fun, tall rain boots (not necessarily together) from all-weather footwear brand, Hunter.  Or just check out our guides to winter coat trends and rain gear.

Michelle Obama Exemplifies An Appropriate Look In Basic Black and Pearls

Michelle Obama at Andrew Air Force BaseEileen Fisher twist front dress

Michelle Obama was photographed at Andrews Air Force base (to meet the families of those killed during last week’s Fort Hood tragedy) and, well, to be frank, she’s put together exactly how anyone ought to be when something terrible happens. While it’s nice when everything’s coming up roses, it can’t hurt to be prepared to look somber, dignified, and yes, a mite bit stylish, for more difficult times. A simple black, twist-front dress is a good place to start.

Of course, Michelle doesn’t stop there.  She rounds out the look in true First Lady style with a short strand of de rigueur pearls and pointy, low-heeled black pumps – we like this equivalent pair from Calvin Klein.

Whether you’ve got to dress for something serious or just need to update your wardrobe with a few mature pieces, we’ve got the goods to help you with black dresses and comfortable high heels.

Anna Wintour Moves In On Washington

anna wintourmichelle obama vogue

Anna Wintour has been selected to join the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities; sounds pretty official right? Apparently, the oh-so-lovable editor-in-chief charmed the Obamas when the First Lady graced the cover of Vogue back in March. Along with celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Edward Norton, Wintour will advise the President on how to “expand the role of arts in society,” WWD reported today.

Wintour may have turned 6o yesterday (happy belated, Anna) but she still looks great. Get her shimmery look with a slightly less shiny sheath by Shoshanna and Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent’s glittery wool cardigan.

If you like those picks, we think you’ll love our guides to the best in cocktail dresses and faux fur.

Michelle Obama Shows Her Wild Side On Halloween (And Makes A Fashion Statement, As Usual)

michelle obama leopard

Ravishing even in disguise, the First Lady wore fuzzy ears, dramatic eye makeup, and a leopard print twinset to greet White House trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Albeit cute, we’re thinking Michelle went for the cop-out costume here, since she probably already had the safari-chic ensemble hanging in her closet. At least she was more creative than her husband, who reportedly went as a “middle-aged Dad.” Hate to break it to you Barack, but you’re not fooling any costumed kiddies with that one.

karina grimaladi antonella leopard mini dressj. crew strada cardigan

We don’t advocate for leopard print worn over more leopard print (other than on Halloween) but in moderation; as Michelle’s chic holiday ensemble shows, this playful pattern can work. Karina Grimaldi’s sexy silk halter dress and J.Crew’s ruffled abstract leopard print cardigan are both fun and tasteful every day options.

The Michelle Obama Action Figure Probably Won’t End Up In Sasha And Malia’s Playroom

Michelle Obama action figure dollbarack obama action figure

I guess that’s what you get these days for reaching fashion icon status – a debatably useful, moderately unattractive doll that’s supposed to be YOU even though it doesn’t, in fact, really look like you.  Congratulations, Michelle.  After all that hubbub surrounding the time you wore shorts, we have faith that you have the good humor to overlook this kind of thing.

However, we suppose it was only fair that this “action figure” be created (it debuts November 15th) since the same company, Jailbreak Toys, already made a Barack Obama figurine.   And we do appreciate the Michelle Obama doll’s sartorially accurate outfits.  She comes in three versions:

1.  The black and red Narciso Rodriguez Election Day dress
2.  The purple Maria Pinto “fist bump” dress
3.  The black and white Donna Ricco dress worn on The View

We’d recommend dressing like Michelle Obama rather than keeping a doll around that’s dressed like Michelle Obama.  We’re happy to cop the First Lady’s style in this purple dress from White House favorite J. Crew or in a Kay Unger black and white sleeveless sheath.

For more of the look, another sheath dress or two can’t hurt, particularly when paired with a cardigan and a classic brooch.

Our Photogenic First Family Poses For Their Portrait

obama family portrait

On Mrs. O overload? For us, there’s no such thing. Annie Leibovitz’s Obama family portrait was just released today and we must say, what a picture perfect group. Dad looks sexy, Mom looks fashionably fit (as usual), and the girls are scrumptiously cute. New York Magazine revealed that the First Lady wore this gorgeous navy frock in public once before (at a ceremony honoring the late Senator Kennedy) for which we applaud Michelle Obama’s real-world ways.

Like Michelle, we can agree that navy is mature, sophisticated, and looks good on mostly everyone. Take cues from Mrs. O and try this sleeveless knit dress by Oleg Cassini, and don’t forget to catch up with the First Lady (and her clothing) tonight on Jay Leno.

Michelle Obama’s Dropping In On Jay Leno Tonight

michelle o jay

Can Michelle Obama’s appearance on tonight’s Jay Leno Show save the funnyman’s foray into primetime from its ratings nosedive? Probably not, but we’ll definitely be tuning in to check out the duds on our oh so fashionable First Lady. Last time Leno interviewed her (check out the picture above for a refresher) Mrs. O was decked out in a gorgeous printed dress and yellow cardigan (fastened with one of her signature brooches), all from J.Crew. We’ve found some equally presidential items from the store’s new collection, like this paisley shift and belted sweater.

From her famous shorts escapade to the more conservative ensembles, like her perfect execution of florals and pearls, we’ve been devotedly following Michelle’s clothing choices. So what will the style-icon wear to Leno this time around? We’re kind of hoping she’ll wow us with one of her winning Target finds.

Only One Day Left To Win A Copy Of Michelle Obama’s Style Bio

Mrs.-O-bookmichelle-obama-wears-pink-cardigan

With the help of Mrs-O.org, we’ve been faithfully following the bold fashion choices of Michelle Obama. She shocked conservatives and the elderly everywhere when she wore shorts and taught us a thing or two about strappy florals and pearls, so obviously we’re pumped that the site’s founder has put together the ultimate coffee table book, detailing the impeccable taste of our stylish First Lady. The book, which includes over 100 photos, as well as interviews with Mrs. O’s favorite designers, isn’t out until Oct. 28th, but we’ve got three copies and we’re giving them away right now, as part of this week’s Freebie Friday contest.

Take cues from “The Face of Fashion Democracy” and enter now to win, you’ve only got one day left.

Michelle Obama Takes Over The Florals And Pearls Look From Anna Wintour

michelle obama in thakoon at G20 summit dinnerthakoon floral dress

We were going into a little bit of Michelle Obama withdrawal, but the G20 summit in Pittsburgh has swooped in and saved us by providing a new MObama photo-op. She hosted a dinner last night wearing a new Thakoon floral dress (of which Anna Wintour would approve) that showed of her (ridiculously enviable) toned arms.  Of course, that particular resort collection dress can’t be found anywhere, but we love Thakoon’s alternate, slightly darker floral dress ($785) that would be perfect straight through fall.

If you’d like to keep things strappy, subtly floral, and a bit more on a budget, we’d recommend this Banana Republic dress ($132).  And of course, don’t forget the long strand of pearls ($34) to complete the look.
