When I first previewed the Jason Wu for Target collection back in September, it seemed February would never come. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on these fresh, springy dresses (and it was barely fall). Well, time flies when you’re shopping online–today, it’s finally hit stores and it’s ready for you to pillage. Every single piece exudes a pulled-together look–we could all use some of that magic in our wardrobe. Thanks to this warm winter (sorry Groundhog, I think you need glasses) they’re practically ready-to-wear right out of the box. Maybe with tights for a few more weeks, but still!

We sat down with Heidi to discuss what its like to design for the Queen of Pop. “It’s an honor,” Heidi told us. “Just to get on Madonna’s radar, and to hear that she requested this specific piece that has my name on the mouth – I was like ‘you’re kidding me.’ Major.”

So how does one get the attention of an artist who has, pretty much, seen it all? For starters, Heidi finds beauty in places that aren’t already ‘tapped out’ by other jewelry designers. During our meeting, I couldn’t keep my eyes off one of her new designs: a 14K gold and purple diamond cast of the female pelvis.

“All of my pieces are an homage to the naked skeletal form,” she says while examining the pelvis. “I love animals, human anatomy and animal anatomy.” She even sites old German lithographs and Grey’s Anatomy as some of her design inspirations.

Her attention to detail is what also sets her apart from other designers. Her signature pieces, cast mostly in silver and brass, receive several rounds of hand-crafting: from black rhodium or gold finishing, to the clever use of gemstones — like rubies for eyes, black diamond nostrils and moonstones for brains.

Before jewelry, Heidi was always sketching and painting skulls and little creatures. She even has a name and complete bio for each of her beloved characters. “Günther is a prehistoric hummingbird skull ring,” she tells me. “He is as sexy as he is dangerous.”  A vivid imagination is another thing she and Madonna seem to have in common.

Zac Posen is making a very concerted effort to make his designs accessible for all: first, he teamed up with Target for a hugely-popular collaboration in 2010, then he launched a lower-priced Z Spoke line, and now he’s bringing his signature prints and dresses to a mall near you: in April, a 12-piece capsule collection will hit Lord & Taylor stores and online.

The collection will be comprised of 12 dresses, priced $149 to $199, in a “versatile palette” of lace, faille and jersey. Mark your calendars, ladies!

It’s less than a week until Jason Wu‘s highly anticipated collaboration collection for Target hits stores on Sunday, Feb. 5. So while we prepare our elbows and wallets for some serious bullseye shopping, we’ll have to ogle at some privileged celebrities that got to show off the coveted threads at the launch party. Young Hollywood starlets like Blake Lively and Chloe Moretz showed up in a monochromatic look, while French pop star Yelle opted for a graphic t-shirt of Milu, the collection’s black cat mascot.

Launch party DJ, Harley Viera-Newton, played tunes through the night in a pleated shift dress. And actresses Emmy Rossum and Jaime King, as well as model Shanina Shaik, showed their support in the designer’s affordable creations. Which of these celebrity-modeled looks are you most excited to stock in your closet?
