Fashion for a Cause: Stuart Weitzman Celebrity Shoe Auction

I always knew there was a reason I liked Stuart Weitzman. His fabulous shoes are certainly reason enough, but it's always refreshing when fashion houses use their "powers" for good. Case in point: Stuart Weitzman's Seventh Annual Shoe Auction benefiting ovarian cancer research. For the month of September, which happens to be Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the luxury designer will be auctioning off celebrity-designed shoes on stuartweitzmancelebrityauction.com. Celebs like Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Ripa, Hayden Pantierre, and Vanessa Williams tried their hand at designing for the cause. Most of the styles are actually pretty wearable, but at $200 and up we recommend investing in a pair for display purposes only. We here at SheFinds also believe in the importance of awareness around this crucial women's issue, so everyday during the month of September check out the blog twice daily (11am and 3pm) for exclusive offers. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Designs to Fight Ovarian Cancer: SeaGlassWear

What: Teal Seaglass Drop Pendant on Silver Chain Why: Seaglass is formed when discarded glass bottles are thrown into the ocean. Over time sand, saltwater and rocks smooth away the rough edges and create these jewels of the sea. Today seaglass is more difficult to find because of the popularity of plastic bottles and recycling programs. Interest in the jewelry sparked when Gates wore one of her first creations to a party. Since then, SeaGlassWear and SeaStoneWear have been featured by an array of national museums and fine galleries including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Smithsonian, and The Natural History of Art. About the Designer: "My work is purposefully simple. I create my jewelry with only naturally-found or recycled materials, such as smooth beach stones and sea glass. I like the statement it makes on many levels about recycling and the simple beauty in nature. I love helping nature recycle these ocean gems; what once was rejected is now revered and we get a second chance to see its beauty," says Gates. "My aunt loved walking the beaches of Woods Hole year-round, and over 40 years amassed a huge collection of sea glass," Valerie explains. "This jewelry line is also my way of honoring my aunt and her connection to the sea." The necklaces, bracelets, earrings and cuff links -- featuring either green, blue-green, brown, white or multi-colored seaglass -- are all one-of-a-kind and handmade by Gates in her studio, and featured on her site. Designs to Fight Ovarian Cancer: Knot Studio

What: Special Edition OCRF Mini Ribbon Cuff in Teal Why: Form and a strong attention to detail have been an important presence in the work of Samantha López Uhthoff, a sculptor by trade. A natural curiosity for processes and materials, as well as a deep respect for the culture of her native Mexico, has led the artist towards a perpetual exploration of contemporary ideas while always remaining mindful of tradition and craft.Although modern in their organic, sculptural forms and romantic in their fragility, the pieces created by Knotstudio also look to history for craftsmanship and technique. The designs often come from looking at ordinary things through a different lens. They reference not only the natural (microscopic view of wood cells, a drop of water dripping from a stalactite, a spider’s web) but also the man made (a detailed view of an old piece of machinery). The result then becomes something both original as well as familiar. Each piece is hand knit out of Argentium Sterling Silver wire and then wrapped for strength making the pieces lightweight, yet surprisingly strong. The hand-dyed teal silk ribbon completes the piece.Proceeds to Be Donated: 20%Get Yours: $98 @ KnotStudio.com Hope Is Not Enough: The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund needs your help. Create for a Cause: Support the OCRF with Your Handbag and Jewelry Designs

You may have heard about Isabella Blow, the designer and stylist who recently passed away from Ovarian Cancer. Our hearts go out to her family and friends as well as to those who have a family member battling the disease. Ovarian Cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States and the scary part is, it often goes undiagnosed until it's too late. The Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) is working to improve early diagnostic treatment programs and compile research toward the conquest of ovarian cancer. During September 2007 SheFinds will partner with the OCRF to raise money for the fund and help small jewelry and handbag designers get exposure through promotion on the SheFinds blog. All you have to do is create a piece that incorporates either the letter "O" and/or the color teal into it and pledge to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of it to the OCRF. For more details on how you can participate and help bring down this disease, visit SheFinds OCRF.
