Project Runway: Models’ Night Out

pr_ep4_models

In episode four, Project Runway contestants got right down to business. The challenge: It’s Models’ Night Out. Designers were on their own again, and had to design an outfit for their models to wear at an industry event that would allow them to stand out and make a statement.

The hardest part for most designers was meshing their models’ tastes with their own design aesthetics. Epperson, coming off a bottom-two appearance from last week, faced a big challenge with his model, who wanted something elegant and punk, with an animal print (?!).  But Epp pulled off a dress that showed his sewing skills and eye for detail, impressing guest judges Marc Bouwer (sitting in for Kors) and celeb stylist Jennifer Rade. Marie Claire editor-in-chief Zoe Glassner, a chattier, more approachable version of Nina Garcia, was also loving the zebra-inspired mini.

However, Logan didn’t fare as well. His model had an equally challenging request for 50s and lace–a little rock and roll look with an evening aesthetic. The result was confusing, as was the styling, which Heidi described as “prom-inspired.” Still, his risk taking saved him, whereas Qristyl’s “safe” black dress sunk her. Heidi said the dress aged her model, and models age in dog years in this industry. Ouch!

There were a couple favorites on the panel – including Carol Hannah’s asymmetrical tank dress with applique skirt – but Althea’s three-piece-suit-inspired evening look wowed everyone. Jennifer wanted to take the outfit after the show for one of her clients.

One thing that judges liked about Althea’s design was that the separates can be worn together, or mixed into the wardrobe. The stretch wool Ediona Blazer ($385) from Theory can literally go from work to dinner over Banana Republic’s fitted Pima cotton tank ($20), which in dark gray is the color essential of the season. And although the weather’s turning chillier, the black  stretch silk Butterfly Short Shorts ($187) by Alice + Olivia will be cute into the fall, and even next spring.

Who Wears Short Shorts? The First Lady Does, And She Looks Good In Them

Michelle Obama bared all of her long legs this weekend during the Obama family vacation to the Grand Canyon. She wore (gasp!) short shorts in a city where the average temperature in August is close to 100 degrees. The poor lady was just trying to avoid heat exhaustion, which would have looked much more un-First Lady-like caught on camera if you ask me. Nonetheless, Mrs. O is taking heat for her unprecedented choice of pants – or lack thereof.

Indeed, her outfit (thigh-high shorts and an unbuttoned blouse over a white cami) was a tad more laid back than the fitted sheath dresses and demure floral skirts we’ve been accustomed to seeing her in this summer, but come on guys, it’s hot down there!

It seems that in terms of fashion, Michelle is boldly going where no First Lady has gone before. Compare her to previous Presidential wives and criticize all you like, but seriously, would you have wanted to see Barbara Bush or Nancy Reagan in short shorts?

Shock political pundits just like Michelle in this pair from J. Crew ($49.50). And if you want more MOBama fashion, check out our buying guides for Michelle Obama style, cardigans, and summer dresses.

Leather Shorts: Fancier Than Denim, And A Little More Rockstar

This might be one of the sharper edges of fashion that we bring you, but we promise, leather shorts are less impractical than they may seem.  Paired with demure shoes and a floral blouse, the look, while quite trendy, is stylish, and an appropriate transition into cooler weather.

As is too often the case with particular items at the forefront of trend wave, the leather shorts out there can be impressive-looking yet rather pricey:

These Robert Rodriguez bermudas ($473) will keep your legs covered for about half the price (surprisingly enough) of some other designer options.

However, if those aren’t calling out to you, knockoff fave Forever 21 is already on top of things with a faux leather pair of shorts that retails for $23.

If you’d rather wait for this trend to draw a little farther back from the edge before testing it out, we’d recommend easing into the look with a solid pair of dark denim shorts. These from Ann Taylor LOFT ($25 from $39.50) will also look lovely with the aforementioned floral blouse.

What To Wear To: The Company Picnic You Are Totally Looking Forward To

Ah, the company picnic. An obligatory event that eats up your Saturday and forces you to see quirky (creepy) co-workers outside their normal habitat most likely donning inappropriate or outright dorky attire. But since you have to go, arrive looking casual, conservative, and of course, stylish.

A pair of solid bermudas are a safe option as your boss may force you to participate in a wiffle ball game or a three-legged race, and that sundress you considered would prove too risky. Wear with a lightweight, loose-fitting blouse that you can tuck in. Add a belt to look more pulled together, and slip on some colorful wedges instead of too-casual flip-flops.

Store your camera (joking – as if you’d want to remember the day) in a structured, classy straw tote and don’t forget your shades to hide those rolling eyes. Have fun!
