Sports Bra Find: Right-Size Support

 What: Moving Comfort's Fiona Bra.

image

Why: You’re a 34A, a 38C, a 32D — not a small, medium or large. So why are sports bras — which are supposed to to provide more support than the average undergarment — such a one-size-fits-most affair? Unlike many of the contenders, Moving Comfort’s Melbourne bra is made to specifically fit C and D cups. Thanks to the DryLayer lining, your properly-supported ta-tas will stay sweat free, too. Sorry, but now you have to think of another reason to avoid the gym…

Fiona Sports Bra For Big Busts

One of the most annoying things about getting in shape (beyond finding a gym, sweating, getting motivated, and dieting) is finding good workout wear. I'm a big person, yet most workout accoutrements are made for thin people.

Irony – it's not just for Alanis Morrisette anymore.

Fiona for Big Busts The biggest culprit is the sports bra, as some of you may know. A lot of them you have to pull over your head, but they're tight around the torso for support. Getting in one of them requires advanced contortionism. Getting out of it while sweaty? Hand me the scissors.

This is why I was so glad to find the Fiona bra from Moving Comfort ($44). It's made for bigger women – sizes go up to 40DD. It snaps on like a traditional bra, has ultra-adjustable shoulder straps, and has a wide band around the back and sides to support without digging in. This bra is so comfortable I can wear it all day (and have) and not feel uncomfortable. It'll support you while you engage in high-impact sports like jogging.

Don't let sports bra torture keep you from supporting yourself properly when you exercise. You'll keep the Fiona around even after you get to your goal weight.

News Flash: Support System

For some women, bras are pretty little underpinnings meant to impress. For others, they're a practical, daily necessity. And then there are those of us (yes, I fall into this category) who despise the little torture chambers. Don't get me wrong — I completely understand their purpose, but I often get nostalgic for the days when I didn't have to wear one.

As it turns out, though, I'm not doing myself any favors by wearing tanks with shelf bras in lieu of undergarments that actually offer some support. Joanna Scurr, a British biomechanics professor, recently did a study on bras and the results were quite surprising.

When we walk, our breasts basically move the same amount in every direction, but speed that up to a jog and "more than 50% of the total movement is in the up-down direction, 22% side-to-side and 27% in-and-out." That's a lot jiggling! And you can imagine that while exercising, the movement is only amplified. Because breasts have little natural support, that makes wearing a good bra crucial, especially during your workouts. Sports bras reduce breast movement by more than 50%, so don't head out for your run or to the gym without one.

Here are a few we like, but check out our sports bra guide for the picks that passed our rigorous testing.

Sports Bra Find: Champion Vapor Seamless Bra

What: Smooth support Vapor Seamless Sports Bra that doesn’t chafe.

Why: When you’re on a long training run, racing your key event or even just heading to the store after the gym, if your sports bra starts to rub, there’s not much you can do about it.

We realized this last year during the middle of a six-hour event, when the seam started to rub the skin raw, finally resulting in a scab so painful we had to wear sweatshirts in the summer (it covered up the fact we couldn’t wear a bra for two days).

However, with Champion’s Vapor Seamless bra -– a take on their heavy-duty and über-popular Vapor bra -– we don’t have to worry. The bra is comfortable enough for yoga, but study enough for your run in the hills…all without chafing.

Sports Bra Find: Marathon-Approved

What: The heavy-duty Champion Vapor Sports Bra.

Why: We run—a lot—which means we go through running shoes (we swear they last way less than 500 miles a pair), water bottles (ever forget a sports drink in your car for a few days?) and sports bras (we just have a hard time finding one that works).

Enter Champion Vapor Sports Bra. With a wide girth, you can still breathe, but with the high-impact racerback style, you don’t sacrifice the girls to do so. The fabric is great too; it blocks more than 95% of UV rays and dries quickly…which isn’t something we can say about those just-stepped-in-a-puddle running shoes.

Sports Bra Find: A Bosom Buddy for Little Ladies

image
What: Jockey Wicking Cotton Back Closure Bra

Why: I don’t doubt that for my well-endowed friends, finding a suitably supportive sports bra can be a real bitch. What my friends fail to understand, is that for those of representing for the itty bitty titty committee, finding a perfect sports bra is no picnic either. They’re little, but they’re there, and though I may not take an eye out if I’m running unsupported, they throb just like the larger models. And due to their petite nature, the threat of the dreaded uniboob is a constant concern.

This is why I’m partial to sports bras like this one, which features lightly padded cups for some subtle enhancement and separation. It’s also made with some magic fabric, which wicks (their word, not mine) moisture away from skin. I don’t know how it works, but I do know that my super sensitive skin doesn’t get nearly as irritated as it does when my well-earned sweat sticks to me for the duration of my workout. No offense to my BFF’s, but this bra is my new best bosom buddy.

A Sports Bra Find: Triple Threat, Double Dry

What: Champion Double Dry Seamless Sports Bra

Why: Ever since the sports bra 1.0 days when athletic undergarments were flimsy, white cotton, uniboob-inducing, glorified ace bandages, women have been searching for a better way to support the girls while working out. For the most part, I haven’t been that thrilled with the offerings. When I tried Champion’s Double Dry Seamless Sports Bra, I was surprised to find that the Tactel nylon and spandex wonder stood stand up to my weekend athletic gauntlet of running, biking and playing tennis — all while wicking away copious amounts of sweat and providing support without cutting off my circulation. Game on.
