Deal Of The Day: Up To 65% Off Sweaters At White House/Black Market

White House/Black Market is an ideal store for those plagued by indecision:  no need to mull over which bright hue you’ll buy that dress in, they only offer clothes in white and black. And really, it’s smart, because you can do a lot with an extensive neutral wardrobe. Here are some practical sweaters, now on sale at the chiaroscuro-themed store.

geometric sweater jacket

With a trendy geometric print and bomber-style fit, we’d wear this sweater jacket ($50 from $98) with skinny jeans and a colorful scarf.

flounced cardigan

White House/Black Market’s sleeveless flounced cardigan ($30 from $88) is more like a knit vest than a sweater. We love that it can be worn draped and open, or belted for a more feminine look.

dolman sweater coat

This cozy, dolman sweater coat ($50 from $98) features fun kimono-esque sleeves and a stylish deep v-neck for a distinctive look.

Project Runway: Bryant Park Is In Sight, Now Edit, Edit, Edit

With Bryant Park as the ultimate prize, the final three designers set to creating 12-piece collections that will wow the New York fashion elite. Tim set off visiting the three ladies as they created their looks over a series of weeks.

pr_ep13_carolhannah

Carol Hannah moved to upstate New York to reduce distractions. On her drive there, she stopped at Duke University, and drew inspiration from the chapel at night. Tim likes her looks so far, but wants her to edit.

pr_ep13_irina

Irina stayed on the Upper East Side to create her collection, but she ultimately draws from her youth in Coney Island to create an ode to New York City. The dark color palette drew concerned criticism from Tim, but Irina pushed on.

pr_ep13_althea

Althea went home to Dayton, Ohio, to work on her looks, which weirdly mirror some of Irina’s. Tim’s biggest criticism is that her 12 pieces don’t look like they’re for the same client, and encourages Althea to edit, edit, edit.

pr_ep13_workroom

With just days to prepare for the show, Carol Hannah is hit with a stomach virus that zaps her energy. Good thing Heidi brings back Gordana, Logan and Christopher to assist the finalists. And surprise, they’ll have to create a thirteenth look for the show. Until then…

preenline_bikerknitoldnavy_knit

As the temps drop, dressing for comfort is all about layers, layers, layers.  The knit Preen Line Tiny Baker biker jacket brings all the style of cropped jackets with the comfort of a knit sweater. Best of all, the details make it a standalone piece over jeans or skinny pants. Similarly, Old Navy’s Metallic Cable Knit Cardigan ($34.50) has a relaxed, but fitted shape, with elbow-length sleeves and a stylish stand-up shawl collar—at a fraction of the price.

Cashmere + Silk V-Neck Sweater

This v-neck ($42 from $89.50) is super-soft – it’s made of cashmere and silk, mmm is right – and features long, comfy sleeves.

Striped Soybean Blend Scoopneck Sweater

For a fitted sweater that’s a top all its own, try Martin + Osa’s striped scoop neck ($38 from $79.50) – this semi-rugby pattern is very in this season. Or simply peruse our guides to the best in v-neck sweaters and cardigans.

What To Wear With: A Long Cardigan (And Look Chic, Not Frumpy)

A long cardigan is a versatile, perennially practical item which has the potential to look great when styled right – think sexy librarian instead of “frump.”  And what with overzealous office air-conditioning and cool late-summer nights that take you by surprise, a long cardigan is a perfect emergency layer to keep folded up in your bag.

what to wear with a long cardigan

Start simple, with a long, lean gray knit.  You can accessorize this in almost any direction you choose, though a geometric ring will stand out well (better than a nearly-hidden bracelet.)  A solid-color long cardigan looks good over a printed dress that’s almost the same length. Be sure to go with a dress with a bit of structure, so you’re not rocking the drapey-hippie look.  A nipped waist will add some nice definition under the sweater.

Last, a slightly edgy bag, with interesting hardware details, and practical but unique-looking flats will keep the entire look thoroughly modern.

J.Crew Is Not Great At Keeping Its Italian Secret

Seems like J.Crew has a big secret that the First Lady has picked up on. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, retailers like Bloomingdale’s and J.Crew are getting fabric from a premium Italian manufactuer, but with one caveat: they can’t tell anyone about it.

loropiana chevron sweater

High-end Italian textile maker Loro Piana creates fine wools and cashmere, and sells its yarn to labels like Brioni and Brooks Brothers, who in turn can put a Loro Piana label in the clothing. Additionally, Loro Piana has its own eponymous line of fine clothing, like this wool/polyester blend Chevron-Print Sweater ($1,450). However, the same yarn is used by J.Crew in its wool and cashmere sweaters, but sans the label.

jcrew cashmere

Or rather, the garments have labels that merely infer their origins, but not too discreetly. “We started with the very finest cashmere in the world, direct from a storied mill in Quarona, Italy,” says the J.Crew Landon Cashmere Cardigan ($298).

Either way, though, it’s no secret that Michelle Obama is a huge fan of J.Crew cardigans, which help make her classic style refined, yet approachable. And if we can all get as many compliments as she does, then I say keep up the good work, J.Crew.

We won’t tell anyone.

Classic Cardigans: Bill Cunningham Appreciates A Woman In Knit

In yesterday’s On the Street, venerable street-style photographer Bill Cunningham’s weekly slideshow for The New York Times, cardigan sweaters were the topic at hand.  Or, as Bill would pronounce it, “cah-digan sweat-ahs.”  It’s hard to say whether his posh old-fashioned accent or the cardigan sweater itself is more of a classic thing.

cardioneone

We love Bill’s pictures of stylish, cardigan-clad women on the streets of New York, and it’s inspired us to do a little shopping ourselves.  Here are our top picks:

gray-lamb-cardigan

This L.A.M.B. cardigan is an awesome, slim-fitting wardrobe staple, plus it’s on sale ($150.50 from $215.)

gap-cardigan1

You can’t go wrong with a lightweight, casual v-neck cardigan.  This Gap sweater comes in nine colors, so in addition to fun purple, you can pick up a neutral black or sand ($44.50.)

jcrew-cardigan

A long yet light merino cardigan, like this one from J. Crew ($89.50) looks good over jeans or a skirt, and works for all seasons.

Fashion Show Recap: Designing For High School Cliques Begets High School Bickering

The Fashion Show, Episode 6

From real women to teenagers, episode 6 of Bravo's The Fashion Show opened with a mini challenge that asked the nine remaining designers to create campaign slogan t-shirts for high school senior Giuliana's run for class president. The catch was that each designer had to target them to a specific high school clique (skaters, treehuggers, drama, nerds, etc.). Daniella won with her literal treehugger shirt, and also won immunity for this week's competition.

The following elimination challenge built on the clique concept, and each
designer had to create an outfit for a twenty-something woman inspired
by their clique.

image

Most of the outfits were indeed inspired, but some definitely missed the mark. Johnny, who unfortunately scored the jock clique, designed a strange tank top and shiny shorts combo and then put it over fringed leggings. Hmmm. Angel landed in the bottom two again with her B-girl ensemble that included wool office-wear pants (of different hem lengths) and a shiny puffer vest.

Guest judge Charlotte Ronson did not heart this outfit at all, and Angel was sent packing.

The Fashion Show, Episode 6, Merlin's winning design

Alas, Merlin's tears of frustration were for naught as his Mean Girls-inspired sheer top, fitted jeans, and creative sweater won the audience over. Unfortunately the sweater is not for sale but you can certainly take home the Mean sheer top ($95) or Mean cut jeans ($150).
