Gwen Loves Her L.A.M.B. Bag, We Remain Fixated On Her Tee

You know a star genuinely likes her fashion line (and is truly involved in the designs) when she actually wears it somewhere not expecting to be photographed. Case in point: Gwen loves her L.A.M.B. and carries things like this Etoile L.A.M.B. handbag (which comes out in October) all the time.

And while it’s an awesome bag, I can’t take my eyes of her slouchy, asymmetrical tank, which she’s belted low on her hips. It’s lightweight and perfect for layering under blazers and jackets for fall.

Elizabeth & James Asymmetric TankUrban Outfitters Asymmetric tank

For a not-so-simple black silhouette, opt for this Double Layer Tank from Elizabeth & James ($95), or if you’re feeling adventurous, try a more extreme cut with Urban Outfitters’ Asymmetrical V-Neck Tank ($32).

Search our guides for the perfect leather jacket to layer over your new tee. And add a slouchy belt to the mix, if the mood strikes.

Bravo’s New Fashion Show Is Gunn Shy, But Not Lacking Pheasant Feathers

I cheated and read some of the reviews of Bravo's new Project Runway replacement, The Fashion Show,
before I watched the premiere last night. They were savage. But even
after seeing the debacle myself, I can't really say that I hated it. I
just miss Tim Gunn.

Bravo's The Fashion Show

The static duo of Isaac Mizrahi and Kelly Rowland (better known as one of the girls not Beyonce in Destiny's Child) is like a wet blanket. Isaac is grating and lacks the charm of TG, who seems to have some genuine fondness for the designers. Rowland looks pretty and wears cute clothes -the orange dress above is Zara. Other than that, she just reads off the cue cards.

imageimage

What's good about the show is what Bravo excels at: casting. And wow, what a group of characters. You can't miss Merlin, clad in all red with a 2-foot pheasant feather in his chapeau. Oh, did I mention he was wearing white patent women's boots with 3-inch stiletto heels?

Merlin, along with Johnny and Keith, won the first mini-challenge. They then got to pick their teams, who each had to select one must-have wardrobe item, reproduce it five times, and incorporate it into five different looks.

image

Johnny's group decided that harem pants were their must-have wardrobe item (someone must have seen our post). Too bad no one in the group knew how to sew satin.

Jonny's losiung outfit on Fashion ShowVictoria's Secret convertible dressVictoria's Secret convertible skirt

What seemed like a good idea at first, Keith's group decided to do a convertible stretch wool tube dress that could be worn many ways. But they doubled the fabric, so even the size 2 models looked like sausages. Convertible dresses, like this one from Victoria's Secret, should be form-fitting and flowing. Breathing shouldn't be a problem.

image

Merlin's bolero and James-Paul's Rubik's Cube dress (which are both available for purchase right now) ended up as the top two designs on the runway. After a sorry pow-wow among Isaac, Kelly, Fern Mallis (IMG Fashion VP) and guest judge Elie Tahari, James-Paul was chosen as the winner.

Shortly after, Isaac told Jonny D they didn't buy his designs. Ha! I wonder how long Bravo marketing took to come up with that one. No matter, it couldn't have been more awkward.

He May Not Be Into You, But You’re Most Definitely Into The Clothes

We recently covered the fashion from He’s Just Not That Into You and this movie evidently hit a style nerve because we had tons of comments asking where to find particular items. From Scarlett Johansson’s adorable low-key clothes to Jennifer Connolly’s watch, here’s where to find some coveted items from the film:

imageimage image
One reader asked where to locate the cute clothes Scarlett was wearing in the pedicure scene. The t-shirt is a James Perse Casual T ($50) and the sweater is Lux by Urban Outfitters, which doesn’t appear to be available anymore, so we think this Kimchi Blue Open Cardigan ($44) should do the trick. The jeans are ScarJo’s own Levi’s 501 Boyfriend Jeans ($78).

imageimage image
In regards to Jennifer Connolly’s red wrap watch, it’s an Hermes Cape Cod PM Watch and it's $1,850. For a more cost-effective version, we suggest the Pedre Double Wrap Watch ($90).

image
Lastly, we love the debate over ScarJo’s red slip under her vintage dress in the office scene. We can’t be sure this is the right one, but this Free People Pleated Skirt Dropwaist Slip ($88) is a good enough facsimile to get you into your own compromising positions.

We’re working on additional finds, but let us know what else you’re looking for. We live for this stuff!

Heart Pangs for A. Wang

A Wang in His "Office"

King of the Lower East Side, Alice Dellal – inspired, heart – throb of the pseudo new-wave '80's, love child of acid wash denim and cleanly-cut grunge – and newly appointed fashion world darling, Alexander Wang, is up to his old tricks. Turning the simplist, but most staple items into lust-worthy treats is no small task – but Mr. Wang has shared with the world, the artfully distressed T with his aptly named new bridge line, T by Alexander Wang. T, which should be priced at about $60 to $80 per piece, sounds a lot like the almost aggressively beaten-up tops Wang's usually seen sporting: "'Necklines are stretched and armholes are strategically lowered so that it looks worn in,' he explains. 'It’s like sleeping in a T-shirt and then wearing it the next day. It’s not this crisp little T out of the dryer. It’s draped and kind of wilted.'” Saks, lagarconne.com, shopbop and barneys are all promoting the new duds – in shops and online (available now).

Personally? I say check out the simple perfection of the single-pocket T and the racerback tank.

Ugh. SO perfect. Now if I could only look like Erin Wasson.

I Resolve to Quit Wearing Baggy Clothes and Actually Look Thinner

As a curvy girl and a formerly very large woman, I have literally been hiding in oversized clothes for years. Here’s a tip from me to you and it doesn’t matter if you have lost weight, will never lose weight, or are just a fabulous girl with dangerous curves: big baggy clothes make you look bigger than you are. A defined waist and clothes that fit your body no matter what your size will always make you look thinner and much more put-together. Oversized = sloppy. Period.

image

My resolution is to throw away all the baggy items and to start wearing clothes that fit. Note that I said “fit,” which is not the same as “tight.” One of the best items in any woman’s wardrobe is a fitted black blazer, which I can throw over pretty much anything. This Free People Black Cotton 3-Button Blazer ($77) is an inexpensive option and look sharp with almost anything.

image

I am a t-shirt fanatic and I need shirts that fit. I have always been and will always be a fan of The Gap Favorite V-Neck T (on sale for $4). Chesty girls should wear v-neck tops because they're slimming and draw attention away from your waist.

image

Belts have now become my friend. Buy a belt that fits and it will make you look like a total rock star. This Tory Burch Wooden Square Belt ($105, was $175), can be worn with jeans, over sweaters and dresses, and the cutest look ever: over the black blazer.

image
Last but not least, I am a denim addict but I cannot rock the boyfriend jean. I’m too voluptuous for that and I look like I rolled out of bed and am heading to Freshman English. My personal favorites for fit right now are my PRVCY Barbados Straight Leg Jeans ($208.) They fit like a dream and give me the illusion of the skinny jean but are way more comfortable.

Alternative Earth’s Tees Are Incredible – And Not Just Because They’re Eco

You know that t-shirt that makes your boobs look hot, your stomach tight, and your look the perfect combo of casual and cool? Well, in 1996 designer Greg Alterman founded Alternative Apparel to produce just that–infinite versions of a classic American garment. And while he'd probably say they've been fulfilling that mission quite well, thank you, ever since then, we think that only in 2007, with the launch of the eco-label Alternative Earth, did the company finally achieve perfection–with the 100% organic tee that not only flatters your form but looks after Mother Nature, too.

Tunic

The Organic Tunic ($28) is sheer and extra-long, and comes in short-sleeve as well as tank options.

RawEdge

The Raw Edge Tee ($22) is pre-fabricated to look like that favorite top you cut the neck out of when you were fourteen. I wear it to yoga (sans headband) or over a colorful tank-top for an 80s night out on the town (also sans headband. Always sans headband).

A portion of proceeds from Alternative Earth purchases (which are, admittedly, pretty darn affordable) go to fund the Wildlife Trust, so you're not only helping Mother Nature, you're helping her creations, too. Check out the website to see other shirt designs, and the 2009 line of hoodies, sweats, and other organic loungewear.

Week Of What I Wear To Work: How A Grad Student Dresses Smartly

As a grad student there are three things that inevitably influence my choice of dress:

1. If it's not on sale, forget it.
2. I don't get paid to sit through three hour lectures and live in the library, so comfort is paramount.
3. At this stage in the game, you have to look the part. Suits are slightly overkill, but looking polished and put together is of utmost importance.

Slim cut, dark wash jeans or dress pants with a touch of stretch are clean looking, but easy going. These Diesel Lowky Jeans ($167) are hot, but classy. With jeans, a tailored suit jacket or wool blazer ($235) looks smart over a plain white tee ($49).

Depending on where I plan to wind up after class, I choose between cute, no-fuss flats (for a date with the library) or classic pumps ($55) (for drinks with the girls). Jewelry stays simple with plain diamond studs ($195) and a pendant ($698). As for the rest of the accessories, a big, sturdy bag ($40) is a must for my books, and a scarf ($87) for cooler days is crucial. The outfit isn't complete without a classic trench ($225) to bring it all together.

Thanks So Much, GOOP, For Making Us Look Better In These Stressful Times

image

In these uncertain times, everyone is looking for a voice of reason, someone to tell you how to make life simple and easy. Who knew it might be Gwyneth Paltrow? The Oscar-winning actress has launched her own lifestyle site, GOOP by Gwyneth Paltrow. Each of the individual sections (Make, Go, Get, Do, Be and See) comes complete with an essay written by the star herself on how to live your best life.

imageimage

The first newsletter gives three looks for busy moms to be comfortable and look stylish – and, of course, as the face of Tod’s, some of their products are featured. The most cost-effective things listed in this newsletter are an American Apparel Unisex Tri-Blend Tank Top ($19) and some cute Uniqlo pieces (not available online).  Then it goes up from there, from the Grey Ant Welt Jean in Navy ($286) all the way up to a Tod’s Cashmere Trench ($1995, also not available online). Not only are the pieces mostly out of reach, but there’s no suggestion on exactly where to purchase these time-saving pieces.

image image

I guess as the site progresses it might develop a little more, but other than the personal essays from the star, I think GOOP is…well, a little goop-y.

image

Gwyneth has also shown up in Tod's short film, 'Pashmy Dream', directed by Dennis Hopper about the sporty new Pashmy Bag ($1125) – which causes some drama in the story above.
