Forget Pepper Spray, You’ll Be Safe And Sound In Louise Goldin For Topshop

If you thought Alexander McQueen’s now-famous Fashion Week pumps were monstrous, get a load of these crazy, ultra-glam shoes from Louise Goldin for Topshop. We got a sneak peak of the upcoming collection, thanks to Mykromag, and although it’s clear you could seriously injure someone while wearing these, we still think they’re pretty darn cool. This fashion-forward designer knows that extreme footwear is it right now – just be careful when crossing your legs, ripped tights don’t go with these heels.

It may be difficult to find equally spikey shoes right now (we’ll see if Goldin’s line starts a movement come spring) but you can’t go wrong with some trendy studded styles. Dolce Vita’s Trinity pumps are chic (and the studs won’t break the skin) while Steve Madden’s glitzy gladiator heels will certainly jazz up any ensemble.

The fashion industry may still be suffering as a result of our floundering economy, but according to the Los Angeles Times, shoe sales seem to be on the rebound.

Designers have only gotten more creative with their footwear, and from studded bondage shoes to unbelievably high heels, styles are getting increasingly extreme. Supposedly, many women feel that investing in an expensive “standout” shoe is more prudent than shelling out for say, a faux fur vest. So, buyers are tending to go for crazy, aggressive platforms and bizarre not-shoe shoes to make plainer ensembles more eye-catching. After all, who could forget Alexander McQueen’s twelve inch lochness monster pumps at Fashion Week?

Inflate (And De-Inflate) Your Chest

Move over, water bra. The greatest thing, and there are many, about this Chinese inflatable bra is that you can de-inflate it, too. You know, for a demure look, which is clearly what this piece of lingerie is all about. Going up two cup sizes is really recommended for “parties.”

Alas, the She’s Mine bra is available only in China, but we did manage to find you some inflatable inserts, so any normal brassiere can take you up a cup size or two. Or, in a more normal vein, you can cop the lacy look and still get the cleavage with this Calvin Klein push-up bra.

Though none of the options could double as a life-preserver, be sure to check out the best in bras for big busts, for smaller busts, and for wearing under t-shirts, in order to cover all your lingerie needs.

Fun trend alert: Elle UK brought us these snaps of Sienna Miller, model Agyness Deyn, and Kate Moss all breaking out their Vivienne Westwood buckled pirate boots the moment it got chilly.

Zappos carries a tall version of the original Vivienne Westwood in basic black (above), but it’s no small investment. Luckily DV Dolce Vita’s Kent ankle boot lets you get the buckled-up look for a lot less, and you can loosen the straps so as to let the footwear hang a bit, like Sienna and Kate’s boots do. Mia’s appropriately-named Outlaw boot, however, keeps with the buckled style while looking quite pulled together.

Skulls And Fashion – A Match Made In Heaven, Or Hell

Appropriately enough, today Slate ran a slideshow run-down on the history of skulls in fashion. Once scary, then edgy, and now solidly entrenched in the chic mainstream, the look is everywhere. Evidence of that fact is Alexander McQueen’s knuckle duster, which is priced well over a grand, yet somehow still sold out everywhere in black (however, you can join the waitlist for more at Net-a-Porter). Luckily it’s still around in bright girly pink.

Let’s keep our cranial indulgence to a reasonable quotient. This skull-print scarf is less of an investment than McQueen’s clutch bag, but still lets you get your fix of both the designer and the look. And William Rast’s skull tank presents a whimsical, almost cheerful version of the image. Of course, skulls are often best presented in 3-D, which is why we’ve got a few different macabre jewelry options for you to get the style.

Boden + British Moms Teach Us A Thing Or Two About Fashion

According to The Daily Mail, the cult item of the moment (amongst middle class British moms that is) is anything by the colorful, cheerful brand, Boden.

From the retro-patterned coats to a bright printed blouse, the brand’s definitely won us over. We can see why so many are addicted (even Michelle Obama is rumored to have requested a catalog). We also dig their photo campaign – the models are set in “real” life rather than in a creepy white space. Although, this chick above looks like she got so excited about her spotty scoop neck that she messed up her friend’s card trick – a problem so many of us face in our daily lives.

True, these British models may be having a little too much fun, but we’d find it hard not to smile in this pretty floral dress with gathered sleeves or a pair of bejeweled Boden flats.

After you take the plunge and go colorful, take a hint from the Brits and pick up a colorful sheath dress or pencil skirt.

Ombre Hair, In Case One Color Just Isn’t Enough

It’s bound to happen. You’ll get sick of your blonde/brunette/redhead locks and need to have multiple shades adorning your head, but certainly not in boring old highlight form. Okay, maybe this isn’t bound to happen, but Refinery 29 has picked up on an interesting ombre hair trend, and we certainly wouldn’t want you to miss out on the best way to cop the look (if you must).

For maximum shading and contrast, if you aren’t already, you’re going to need to go partly blond. The Clairol Xtreme FX Bleach-Out Kit has the tools that make it easy to lighten all or part of your head as you see fit. And then, to get the most fun out of this look, dye the ends of your hair with a semi-permanent color that will eventually fade to another shade. This way you’ll get more than one color combination from your two-toned strategy. We like the idea of starting off with Natural Instincts’ Suede Light Brown shade.

An ombre coif isn’t low-maintenance. Do it up with mascara and eyeshadow and then style the look à la your favorite celeb.

Velvet Leggings Make Us Feel Like We’re Five, In A Good Way

These leggings remind us of some pants we had when we were toddlers, but we really think this is going to be a thing: we’ve seen velvet leggings pop up in tons of collections we love (Alice + Olivia, Bop Basics, and more), and there’s even a $600 pair from Moschino (which, for the record, we do not support).

This trend is good. We’re impressed. Because, to point out the obvious, leggings are really comfortable, easy to tuck into boots, and go with everything.

To point out the not so obvious, velvet is thicker and more forgiving than regular-legging cotton, which means not everyone will see your pink thong (unless, of course, you intend otherwise).

Plus, who doesn’t love running their hands over soft, cushy velvet on a cold winter day? And it’s not that weird to sit at brunch with your hands on your thighs, right? No, I know, it’s so not.

Good Luck Finding Your Accessories This Spring

Hot on the heels of see-through shoes come lucite-loving accessories. Seriously, will we be losing all color this spring?

I like this trend in jewelry form, and less so when it takes the shape of a bag (that Prada number only looks good because it’s empty, which is not, I believe, how most women carry their totes). Both looks have been appearing on spring/summer 2010 runways, but luckily, lots of alternate jewelry options are available now.

I love this Alexis Bittar Lucite Bangle and this smoky lucite cluster necklace, which would be perfect around the holidays. But for now, I’ll forgo the clear handbag.

Alexander McQueen Schools Us On The Theory Of Evolution

New York Magazine provided us with a much-needed daily dose of wacky this morning, with photos from the startling Alexander McQueen show at Paris Fashion Week. Call me old fashioned, but these ten inch creatures look as if they emerged from the sea to prey on us all…or maybe just to dance some disco here on solid ground.

The Daily Mail reported that the collection was inspired by Darwin’s The Origin of Species, and since we all know that according to the laws of evolution, after sparkles come weird, prehistoric animal prints, McQueen is right on point with these patterned mini dresses and crazy boots. Props to the models for making it down the runway in these shoes, but bruises and scrapes do not go with our fall wardrobe.

While McQueen’s sparkly footwear isn’t in our future, we can sport a little embellishment here and there. Try a more practical, studded suede harness boot or maybe a very Beyoncé-esque sequin vest.
