Trend Alert: Velvet Blazers
November 14, 2005
I’ll let you in on a secret: My parents used to have a portrait of a bullfighter painted on velvet hanging in their bedroom (wanna make something of it?) Although I don’t think that picture left their wall until well into the 80s, the velvet trend was long gone by then. But, to my glee, velvet has made a resurgence, like so many other staples of retro fashion. Here’s how to wear it:
Pair a velvet blazer with your new skinny jeans, and you’ve got yourself a modern outfit for a casual Friday. For evening, change into a pair of stiletto boots, slip on a cami and you’re done! Easy glam. Personally, I’d ditch the jeans and change into matching full leg or boot cut velvet trousers. But that might be velvet overload for some. Petite gals especially may want to avoid all-over green velvet, lest drunken passersby start screaming, “Look! It’s the mayor of Munchkinland!” Wearing the jacket with velvet short pants and a blouse with an oversized collar might get you mistaken for Little Lord Fauntleroy. That’s how not to wear it. Not that you’d ever do that, would you? Find velvet at Bluefly.com.
