Soaking nails in warm water: "Despite popular belief, soaking your hands in warm water prior to a manicure is not the best practice," Katie told us. "Water makes the nail bed swell, so your lacquer can end up being too big for the nail."  This could lead to chipping, eek!

Blowing on nails: Avoid blowing on your nails to speed up the drying process, which can cause air bubbles an uneven finish. "If you’re in a hurry, dip your fingers in ice cold water before heading out of the salon," advises Katie.

Using cuticle oil: "Don't use oil before a paint job," states Katie. She advises to politely ask your manicurist to clean your nails with acetone after using any oil or lotion, as it perfectly preps for paint.

Shaking the bottle: "Don't shake the nail polish bottle vigorously before using, as tiny air bubbles could get trapped in the color as you apply," Ange & Vernice told us. "Gently roll the bottle between your hands or tip upside down a few times."

Applying too much lotion: "Avoid using too much lotion after your manicure," advises Katie. "Fragrance oils can lift nail lacquer, making is easy to chip."

Using nail hardeners: Avoid using nail hardners if you can. "They can over harden the nail, causing them to be brittle," relayed Ange & Vernice.

Using certain nail files: Don't worry if your manicurist files back and forward to shape the natural nail. "Just make sure your manicurist is using a 240 Grit or upwards smooth nail file to avoid damage," stated Ange & Vernice. Check out this OPI 240 240 Grit Double Sided Nail File ($4.47).

Skimping on the top coat: Don't skip out on a topcoat just because you're in a hurry to jet. Ange & Vernice explained that "the topcoat is designed to work in synergy with the polish and penetrate the layers to dry, harden and shine." This step will prolong your manicure life and keep your nails looking fresh.
