12 Stores With Extremely Liberal Student Discount Policies
August 23, 2012
It’s been a few years since back-to-school time meant trucking my unevenly tanned self back to the classroom, but even though I’m officially done with my Ramen-and-water college budget (thank goodness!), I still pretend I’m a student sometimes. My ID may be two years expired, but that hasn’t stopped retailers from granting me their oh-so-valuable student discount — many times without even asking. Most of us will be paying off college for the rest of our lives, so why not take advantage of your former student status when you can?
Most retailers no longer require an unofficial class schedule (or, as we’ve found, a student ID) to reap the benefits, and saving an extra few bucks at checkout is always a good feeling. Just last week, one of our editors (a Columbia grad, no less!) purchased a new MacBook Pro and received the 20% student discount without so much as showing ID. In addition to the major discount, she nabbed 20% Apple Care and a free $100 iTunes gift card. Earlier this month, I went to J.Crew to do a little summer sale shopping and they didn’t even ask if I was a student — they assumed and awarded me the 15% off, even on sale merch. I stayed quiet.
It may be a little dishonest, but if it saves you a couple hundred, more power to you! Here, we’ve founded up a few tried-and-true retailers with very liberal student discount policies just in time for back-to-school season. Sometimes, it just feels good to be bad.
Apple: You have to be 18 to get the 20% off student discount, but it can often save you hundreds.
J.Crew: Enjoy 15% off if you’re a student (or, were a student) and 20% off if you’re a teacher.
Madewell: Same plan as J.Crew. 15% off for students and 20% off for teachers.
Topshop: Take a hefty 20% off just by providing your school email address.
H&M: Get 15% off at checkout.
Adobe: Though it totally depends on the product, your student ID could get you up to 80% off.
Dorothy Perkins: They offer a modest 10 % off, but every little bit counts!
Miss Selfridge: Take 10% off.
Banana Republic: In addition to their great sales, get an extra 15% off by mentioning your school.
Ralph Lauren Rugby: Though not as lenient with expired IDs, get 15% off.
Club Monaco: Get 20% off on full-priced and sale merchandise.
Urban Outfitters: Save 10% with an ID in-stores and an email address online.
