Being pregnant is a beautiful thing, but it’s also kinda hard—I’ve been there, I know. And to be honest, the hardest part for me was probably trying to get dressed everyday. Your body is in a constant state of change, and once you’ve outgrown everything that you actually like in your closet, you really feel screwed (totally didn’t mean that pun). Besides for that, the thought of spending money on scary looking maternity clothing really horrified me—I was determined to look good, but I also didn’t want to spend a fortune on things that I knew I’d toss once I gave birth. So instead, I looked for clothes that weren’t maternity, but worked for basketball bellies. Obviously certain things, like maternity jeans, were unavoidable, but other pieces that I’d normally wear, like loose silk blouses and slouchy overalls still worked, so I felt okay spending a little more on those. I also felt no guilt buying things like bags and shoes, because one: they have a way of making any woman feel better, let alone a giant preggo, and two: because you really can’t outgrow a bag, and usually your shoe size stays more or less the same.
The bottom line is that you shouldn’t spend a bunch of money on a wardrobe of designer maternity—it’s really just about knowing what sorts of things to look for. That’s why I’m sharing my list of essentials—these were the things that really made me feel so much better about myself when I was pregnant, plus once I found them, getting dressed was way easier.
