2 Halloween-Themed Cocktails That Are Hauntingly Amazing

One shaken, one stirred: two cocktails that will be perfect for your guests this Halloween.

By Talia Kleinplatz of Two for the Bar

How fortuitous is it that Halloween lands smack-dab in the middle of fall? Autumn flavors and spices are present in some of my favorite cocktails. Dark spirits, spices and spirit-forward recipes make great sipping cocktails as cooler weather approaches. Below I share two Halloween alcoholic drinks that bring in some of my favorite fall flavors — just in time for everyone’s most favorite spooky day of the year.

Blood on the Moors

When I asked my husband to help me come up with a couple of Halloween alcoholic drinks, he immediately went to Jagermeister. It’s a longstanding myth that the German digestif incorporates a small amount of deer’s blood into every bottle. Trust me when I say this is most definitely a tall tale, but the haunting legend makes for a nice conversation piece over this eerie libation. The blended Scotch brings in a beautiful, smoky flavor and transports you to the foggy, Scottish moors with every sip.

  • 1.5 oz of blended Scotch
  • 1 oz Jagermeister
  • 0.5 oz Punt e Mes
  • 2 dashes of Abbott’s Bitters
  • Orange peel for garnish

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass over ice and stir. Strain into a chilled rocks glass and garnish with an orange peel.

The Peddler’s Moon

Cocktail creation in my home is most often my husband’s domain. I’m excellent at following a recipe, and he’s amazing at making them up. And last fall, this one entered the realm of legendary in our cocktail repertoire. Combining ginger, lemon, bourbon, and tea syrup, he created something delicate and spicy; a drink that appeals to the novice and the seasoned cocktail lover alike. Its namesake comes from the Stephen King classic “The Dark Tower,” and its flavors are inspired by late summer and early fall. The ginger adds bite and warmth to an otherwise refreshing drink. Make the Oolong Tea Syrup ahead of time so you can shake this cocktail up anytime.

  • 2 oz overproof bourbon or rye
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz Oolong Tea Syrup
  • 2 oz ginger beer
  • Lemon peel for garnish

First, make the Oolong Tea Syrup. Combine one part oolong tea and one part sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer until the sugar is dissolved, approximately 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

Next, combine bourbon, lemon juice, and your Oolong Tea Syrup in a shaker and shake over ice. Strain into a glass. Add fresh ice and top with ginger beer. Garnish with a lemon peel.
