2010 in Review: The Best New Children's Books of the Year

In an ever-electronified world, finding a new children’s book that will last can be challenging. There is less time to browse in a bookstore, and many people wait for the bestseller lists to tell them what books are worth buying.

But here at MOMfinds, we believe in the virtues of quality children’s literature and bringing it to our readers. As such, here are 5 of our favorite children’s books from 2010.

A Sick Day for Amos McGhee: The word “classic” is overused to describe children’s books, but A Sick Day for Amos McGhee really does evoke the books of our childhood. The simple story–a kind zookeeper is repaid for his lifetime of caring for his animals when he catches a cold–and the beautiful, soft illustration style brings to life themes kids love: animals, absurdity, and getting the most out of a sick day. It’s sure to be a favorite long beyond 2010.

The Quiet Book: Kids are all too familiar with loud, and in an overwhelming, over-stimulating world, sometimes it’s good to remember the importance of being quiet. The many types of quiet are artfully depicted in this book, like the “first one awake quiet” where a little rabbit does his morning stretches; or “making a wish quiet” where a pensive porcupine wearing a party hat sits on a stool. And while all of these are priceless, perhaps the most is the quiet you’ll have while your little one tucks into this book.

Thumb Love: A funny, heartwarming story of a girl who has to quit the very common habit of thumbsucking, Thumb Love will hit home for kids of all ages. When Lulu follows a 12-step program to kick the habit, despite the protests of her anthropomorphic thumb, hilarity ensues. The message of trying again even though you sometimes fail rings true through punchy text and cartoonish illustrations, and readers will root for Lulu till the very last page.

Dinosaur vs. The Potty: This uproarious tale of a (dinosaur) toddler’s rebellion is not your average potty book. When a small red dinosaur refuses to go potty, he imagines that every time he decides not to go, he is a champion: “Dinosaur wins again!” But when he can’t wait any longer, readers wonder if he’ll make it to the potty in time? The growing urgency is hilarious, and then, of course, the last page when he finally relents is a welcome relief. Sure to be an instant hit with the preschool crowd.

Dog Loves Books: In this sweet book, reading takes center stage. Dog loves books so much that he decides to open his own bookstore. When no customers come, he bides his time reading (of course!), and when he finally does have someone ask for help, he knows just what to suggest. The story can be enjoyed simply on the illustrations alone until your little one is old enough to read on his own, but either way, this is a celebration of the virtues of reading for all ages.
