3 Humidity-Proof Hairstyles For When Hurricane Season Seems Endless

Messy Chignon: Of course, any updo works best with dirty hair, so to get some real staying power, try not to wash your hair for 2-3 days. Now for the bun: after you lightly spritz your strands with a texturizing spray, side part your hair and secure it in a low ponytail, letting any angles or fly-aways hang loose (you can always pin them back when you're done). Wrap your around the ponytail to create the chignon, pinning after every full loop. When you're done, lightly tug on the bun out to loosen it up, letting small curls go rogue. Once you get the look you want, secure with large bobby pins -- I like to make an X with two pins right through the bun -- and finish with a shine serum. For an extra feminine touch, add a headband to the crown of your head (like the hipsters do) and tuck any hair in front of it behind the band. This works best forthose days when it's just haphazardly misting instead of actually down pouring. Photo:Pinterest

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($39)

Tucked Braids: The easiest to do on-the-fly, this style is perfect for turning bad hair days into chic ones. Start with towel-dried hair and work a light style cream into the roots. Part it down the center, dividing hair into two symmetrical low ponytails about three inches apart. Loosely braid each side and secure with a hair elastic. Plait the braids, tucking one underneath the other until all of your hair is off your neck. Secure with pins and finish with a hairspray specially made for rainy weather (it does exist!). For a fun twist, you can french braid both sides instead, looping them through one another and pinning. Photo: Shexists

Living Proof 'Hold' Humidity Blocking Flexible Hairspray ($24)

Ballerina Sock Bun: If you're keen on keeping fly-aways at bay mid-hurricane (you brave girl, you!), the ballerina bun — a more polished cousin of the ever-popular top knot -- is your best bet. To nab the style, you're going to need one (clean!) sock — it's best to use a men's sock that's not too thick -- and cut the toe off about an inch from the end. Roll it inwards to create a right donut shape. Now for your hair: start with wet hair (or days-old dry hair) and work a shine serum through your strands, focusing on on your ends. Secure your hair into a high ponytail, teasing the crown for extra volume if you'd like. Pull your hair through the center of rolled up donut and position it so only the last inch of your hair is through — and start rolling! As you roll toward the base of the pony, tuck your hair underneath, spreading your strands around the sock donut to be sure it's covered. Once the bun is resting in place, secure any loose pieces with a bobby pin under the bun. Because the sock is there, the bun won't lose its shape on a super rainy day. To combat frizz, secure any fly-aways with a headband. Photo: Pinterest
