4 Ways Every Woman Should Switch Up Her Skincare Routine For Summer

If you’ve done a massive closet overhaul in anticipation of summer, well done; you’re way more accomplished than most. However, if you’re taking your winter clothing and putting it aside for shorts, sandals and tanks, doesn’t it make sense to do the same for your skincare? You use different makeup in the summer, so your skincare routine should be switched up a bit, too. If you only make a few skincare swaps from winter to warmer temps, make the four below.
1. Replace your cleansing oil with clay. In the winter, your skin cries out for moisture, moisture, moisture, hence a luxe cleansing oil. During the summer, however, it’s a far greater priority to block the oil–and the inevitable breakouts that follow. Clay cleansers do just that: they help keep the oil at bay as well as help exfoliate the skin (therefore removing the buildup which leads to blemishes). My go-to is REN ClearCalm 3 Clarifying Clay Cleanser for its gentle texture and relaxing scent.
2. Switch your heavy-duty moisturizer to a gel. Instead of lathering on the most luxurious moisturizing cream you can get your hands on, opt for a gentle gel formula. It will not only cool you down, but it also provides the moisturizing you need without the inevitable oil slick when you wake up in the AM. Better yet, opt for an SPF formula during the day (make sure it’s over SPF 30!). One of my favorites is the Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer, which is both hydrating and super lightweight.
3. Find a fragrance that does double duty. You know what smells worse than a packed, sweaty train? An overly-perfumed, packed sweaty train. Keep your summer scent light, airy and barely there–if you use them at all. I prefer to use a scented moisturizing lotion or sunscreen, which will give just a hint of fragrance without being overpowering (and mingling too much with sweat).
4. Don’t forget SPF! You know the drill: you need SPF year-round and especially in the summer. Always use at least SPF 30 on your face and body. And don’t forget your lips, either! Stick with an SPF-laden lip balm for the best of both worlds (like Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25).
