One aspect of everyone’s life that can always use some maintenance is a closet. Think about it: closets get a lot of wear and tear from having clothing, shoes, bags, heavy jackets, accessories and whatever else getting constantly thrown in and out. Then, think about factors like weight gain/loss, fashion trends, etc. to make matters even more complicated. If you go months without sorting through your closet, you’ll be stuck with an abundant amount of clothes you probably don’t need, less space for storage and an overall cluttered mess.
There are easy steps to follow in order to organize your closet like a pro. Once you get yourself all set up, you’ll find it’s way easier to maintain going forward. Follow the tips below:
Step 1: Designate a spot to empty, remove and stack things. Obviously you’re going to be getting rid of clothes, accessories, shoes etc. so you’ll need a place to make piles to keep, store and donate.
Step 2: Remove everything from your closet so you start off with a clear, open space. Begin categorizing the items you want to toss, donate, store and keep. Remember, you can also make a pile of things to sell. It doesn’t hurt to make a few bucks in the process. The general rule of thumb is to let go of items you haven’t worn in the past year.
Step 3: Once you’ve figured out what you’re keeping, decide how you want everything to be organized in your closet. Some people choose to color coordinate and others categorize by article of clothing, or both. Whatever is the easiest for you!
Step 4: Invest in organizational items like bins/baskets and an over-the-door shoe holder, for example. Another must-have item for any closet is slim, velvet hangers. Not only do they save space, but also prevent your clothes from slipping off the hanger.
Step 5: Put everything you decide to keep back into your closet in the order you decide, and you’re good to go!
