If Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries openly fighting at their engagement party didn’t tip you off that the marriage wouldn’t work, there were plenty of other signs, too. While the media is acting “shocked” about their split today, let’s be honest: none of us put a quickie divorce past them. If you watched their E! special, you know that the couple was not made in heaven, but in a publicity press cooker that was bound to boil over. Call it a sham — we call it a shame.
Here are the 5 major signs that the wedding wouldn’t work out:
1. They Got Engaged Too Soon
Sure, there are couples who got married after only a few months of dating and have stayed together for 25 or 30 years, but these are the exception — not the rule. The longer you’ve dated, especially if you’ve lived together, the more you know whether you’re compatible or not. The couple had only been dating for 6 months when he gave her the 20-carat ring — prompting us to joke that she earned 3.41 carats per month of dating, and they hadn’t spent more than 10 consecutive days together. If you’re having any doubts whatsoever about living with your mate after marriage, I’d suggest a trial run before you say “I Do.”
2. They Had A Short Engagement
The engagement is like a trial period for marriage — the stresses of planning, like learning to budget as a couple and getting along with the in-laws, are magnified. Kim and Kris were only engaged for a few months before marrying, so although these issue came up (like her sister Khloe hating him) they were never fully resolved.
3. The Emphasis Was On The Wedding — Not The Marriage
The couple spent $10 million dollars on an over-the-top, lavish wedding, but didn’t spend a proportionate amount of time on their relationship. Kris’ pastor, who married the couple, suggest pre-wedding counseling, but between fittings for her three Vera Wang dresses, dance classes with a DWTS pro, and filming a reality show, the therapy never happened. Your wedding is supposed to be the best day of your life — but only because your groom is your soul mate, not just because you booked Earth, Wind and Fire for the reception.
4. They Disagreed On Deal-Breaking Topics
The couple was seen fighting about deal-breaking topics, such as Kim’s name change, whether they’d live in Minnesota, and what kind of life they would live (lavish for her, modest for him) up until the day of their wedding. Any relationship expert knows that you have to discuss (and agree upon) deal-breaking topics, like whether you want children or not, and what religion you’ll raise them as, etc., before deciding to get married.
5. It Was A Publicity Stunt.
It is being widely reported today that the whole thing was a stunt orchestrated by momager Kris Jenner. So as long as you’re entering in to a valid marriage for more than publicity and money, you’re already ahead of Kim and Kris! #brightside
