Halloween Leftover Candy

My kids accumulated about six pounds of Halloween candy, and as of today, we probably have about five pounds left. I know, that’s a lot of candy to be consumed by a family of four in one day (hey, we’ve shared with some family and friends, too!), so it’s time to think of things to do with the candy besides shoving them in our mouths.

It’s just too bad we don’t live in Florida, where a local dentist is buying leftover candy for $1 per pound. I could have bought a salted caramel mocha frapuccino with that money, although that would probably be worse than eating the candy, right?

Anyway, here are 5 things you can do with all that leftover Halloween candy.

1. Take it to work. Leave a bowl of candy in the snack room or any spot that gets a lot of traffic, and I promise you that bowl will be empty in a matter of minutes. Seconds, maybe depending on who sees it first.

2. Donate it. Give your local nursing home, women’s shelter or soup kitchen a call to find out if they accept candy donations. More than likely, they’ll be happy to take it off your hands.

3. Bake with it. Ok, technically you’ll still be eating it but at least you’re doing something creative with it instead of mindlessly putting it in your mouth. And with the holidays coming up, you can always bake a gift instead of buying one.

4. Use it as a learning tool. You can use the candy to teach your tot about colors, shapes and sizes, and they can count, sort, stack and so on to their heart’s content. Just make sure to keep an eye on any disappearing pieces.

5. Decorate with it. Instead of buying a pre-fab gingerbread house for the holidays, DYI with your leftover candy. You’ll save some cash and have a one-of-a-kind creation.
