If you set a weight loss goal around New Year’s (who didn’t?), you might have already hit your first plateau (or will soon, experts say they typically occur around the 6-month mark of a diet). Personally, I have experienced several plateaus during my 10-month journey to lose 50 pounds of baby weight, and I know first-hand how much of a bummer they can be (I know, “bummer”–very scientific term). The truth is that plateaus are just a normal part of the weight loss process and can be expected even if/when you are crushing diet and exercise. What happens is that the body’s metabolism slows down, and the body does not burn as many calories as it did previously. This means that you can no longer lose weight taking in the same amount of calories that worked for you previously (a bummer, I tell you!!). People experience plateaus whether they are using a fad diet or a lifestyle change to lose weight, and plateaus do not discriminate by weight or age or gender or activity level. They are inevitable, they are natural.
