6 Things Every Woman Should Know Before Buying Foundation

Whenever I hear someone mention foundation, I immediately think of my grandma. “Women still wear foundation?!” I always wonder. But as it turns out, a lot of women actually do wear foundation. A quick office poll revealed that more than half of the SHEfinds staffers wear it.

Considering I’ve never applied foundation a day in my life, I was intrigued. So I reached out to Erica Bishop, a beauty genius over at Prescriptives to get the inside scoop on what every woman should know about foundation. Erica has over a decade of experience working at the Prescriptives counter and now spends her days helping women create their custom blend recips via webcam at Prescriptives.com. Give how long she’s been in the biz, she obviously knows a ton about foundation. Here are the secrets she’s willing to share.

SF: What should every woman know about choosing the right foundation?

EB: The shade must precisely match the tone of your skin. Some women make the mistake of wearing darker shades to appear more tan. Instead, you should really wear your correctly matched foundation and add bronzer on top.

SF: What ingredients are absolute essentials in foundations? Which should women stay away from?

EB: Every woman’s skin is different so it’s impossible to generalize given each person’s sensitivities. That said, if one is looking for a lighter more modern look, it’s best to use a water based formula such as our Custom Blend Liquid Foundation.

SF: If a woman’s never worn foundation before, what are your best beginner’s tips?

EB: Begin wearing a concealer in the areas that she feels she needs coverage. If she’s interested in more coverage, choose a light-to-medium foundation like our Virtual Skin formula. Apply foundation with a foundation brush, beginning in the center of the face. Use long strokes for lighter coverage and shorter, precise strokes to cover areas she feels need more.

SF: Any tips to keep your foundation from melting off your face this summer?

EB: Switch to a lighter formula. In the Prescriptives line, this could mean changing from our medium-full coverage Flawless Foundation to our light-to-medium Virtual Skin formula. If you have oily skin, consider a powder formula like our All Skins Mineral Makeup.

SF: Any tricks on how to make your foundation last longer?

EB: Start with a primer like our Super Line Preventor Serum which allows for a more even application of foundation. Set foundation with a dusting of our translucent Magic Liquid Powder.

SF: What’s your ultimate foundation no-no?

EB: I have two. Wearing a shade that doesn’t match your skin tone and leaves a line along the jaw bone (i.e. your face doesn’t match neck) or using a deeper shade of foundation to appear tan.
