6 Wedding Items You Should Never Buy Or Book Online

The Dress. "I don't care if you hear a story from your friend who knew someone who's sister bought her gown online and everything worked out--those people are the exception and not the rule," says Danielle Rothweiler of Rothweiler Event Design. "Just because you buy a gown in a store doesn't mean you have to spend $10,000.There are beautiful gowns available for under $2,000. It's so important to go try things on because you might not like a dress once see it on you. Establish a budget and ask the store not to show you anything outside of that number."

The Wedding Rings. While you can save big on engagement and wedding rings online, this is a purchase you want to make in person. Not only is it hard to figure out the quality of the ring through a computer screen, but you also want the chance to try on the ring before saying "I do" to it. In the case of wedding bands, you’ll want to see what it looks like paired with your engagement ring.

The Vendors. A bride should never book her vendors online before meeting them at least once, says Karen Gramlich, owner of Winey Blonde Event Co. and Rosabelle Manor. "Even in the case of a destination wedding, you still want to have at least one site visit or a person you trust’s opinion, such as a wedding planner. If a bride can’t make a trip to meet with the vendors in person, she should at the minimum do proper research and ask for referrals, see how often they do weddings, and what their response time is to questions she has. Talking to the vendors or scheduling a Skype/FaceTime call can also help when making decisions for the big day."

The Venue. You see photos of a venue online and it feels like love at first sight. While you might want to jump on booking it before there are no dates left, don’t make any moves before seeing the locale in person. If you’re having a destination wedding, it’s worth taking a separate trip to see the venue if you can swing it. If not, then you should hire a trusted wedding planner who can give you her honest opinion on different locations in the area.

The Flowers. While ordering from a wholesale florist can save money, there’s no guarantee the flowers you’ll be receiving will be fresh, that they’ll arrive on time, or even be the right flowers for your event. Not to mention that someone will also have to arrange the flowers into bouquets and centerpieces once they get to you. Flowers can really make or break your wedding day décor, so you’ll want to work with a reputable and reliable local florist to make sure everything is put together perfectly on the big day.

The Cake. Ordering a dummy cake or a cake building kit from a baker or on Etsy may sound like a cost-effective option for your wedding, but it could turn into a nightmare, warns Gramlich. "There is no guarantee that everything will go well during shipment and that it will look exactly as it did in the picture. An alternative option is to order a small tier for the bride and groom to cut into and then have a sheet cake in the back with the caterer ready to serve to guests."
