I’ve been getting highlights religiously since 10th grade, and when you do the math (2 hours per visit x 6 visits a year x 13 years) it adds up to nearly 160 hours spent in the salon chair (that’s a lot of Us Weekly). But even though I’ve clocked many, many hours with my stylist–I should have a beautician’s license by now–I had never really gotten the low down from her on what it’s like to be on the other end of the tint brush.
Luckily, my stylist is Kitty Nadel, Color Director for Ted Gibson salon in New York City (her clients have included Lady Gaga, Kesha, Idina Menzel, and more) and in addition to being ridiculously good at making me blonde (despite the best efforts of my roots), she is also incredibly cool and let me grill her on the secrets of the trade. Click through the slideshow above to learn the 8 things that every girl who gets her hair colored should know. And you won’t have to wait 160 hours like I did.
