Saturday Night Live returned this weekend for it’s 40th season (!) with Chris Pratt of Guardians of the Galaxy hosting and pop sensation Ariana Grande as the musical guest (she didn’t even have “that hair”–whoa), but it was a returning cast member Aidy Bryant who stole the spotlight.
Bryant, a new addition to the show in 2013 who has been compared to comic genius Chris Farley, got some of the biggest laughs and most screen time of the evening. First, playing Candy Crowley in the NFL scandal cold open (yep, she got to deliver the “Live from New York…” line), then again in one of the most memorable sketches of the night–in which she attempts to flirt with Chris Pratt in a bar using only hip hop-inspired pick-up lines (cue Bryant singing “It’s my big fat a**–you know you want it!” to Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda”):
Bryant’s star shone brighter than the show’s other leading ladies, veteran Vanessa Bayer and last year’s breakout star Kate Mckinnon, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for multiple leading ladies on SNL. In fact, they usually come in threes or fours: remember the Ana Gasteyer-Molly Shannon-Cheri Oteri years or the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler-Rachel Dratch-Maya Rudolph era? Bryant’s success is good news for the entire cast, as they struggle to find their voice and a new audience after a period of major cast turnover. Bryant was second only in laughs to newcomer Pete Davidson, whose “Weekend Update” bit also stole the show:
Congrats to all–excited to see what the rest of the season will bring!
