Are Thongs Bad For Your Health? The Answer Might Surprise You
February 29, 2016
With a good thong, you can say buh-bye panty lines — Amazing! Butttt (no pun intended), that’s one of the v few perks to that thong life. Some thongs are strangely comfortable (considering that you’re intentionally giving yourself a wedgie by wearing one), but if panty lines weren’t an issue, I know I’d be rockin’ granny panties e’ry day.
But here’s the question: Is it worth it? Yes, you’re usually sacrificing comfort for panty line-free fashion, but are you risking more than that? Are thongs bad for your health?
Unfortunately, the answer isn’t quite black-and-white. If you’re prone to vaginal and/or urinary infections, wearing a thong won’t do you any favors. Otherwise, it isn’t particularly dangerous. However, there are some thong elements that can lead to serious irritation.
Experts say you should wear all-cotton underwear — meaning the entire pair should be cotton, not just the crotch area. Other materials are less breathable than cotton and can trap moisture and sweat, leading to infection.
Wearing a thong on your period can increase these risks — also OMG, who wants to wear a thong on their period?! But, generally, your chances of getting an infection from wearing a thong are pretty low. If you maintain good hygiene practices and stick to cotton, you should be fine!
