A new trend is showing up on the heads of the chic and famous – bangs. Considered passé for years, this new coif has been spotted on all the famous Kates, as well as Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner. I've always loved bangs – I used to tease mine into a cotton candy ball on my forehead in middle school – but it is not a trend everyone can pull off. You not only have to have the right face shape, but also the right hair length. If your hair is too short to begin with, you'll end up looking like Velma Kelly from Chicago. Which is a nice dramatic choice for say, a fancy event, but not necessarily for everyday wear. And don't forget the annoyance factor – it takes a lot of getting used to in order to tolerate wisps of hair perpetually on your forehead. But other than that, I say go for it. Bangs can look very chic, when done right. In order to avoid the stylized look, opt for a messy cut – where the bangs are slightly choppy and uneven. And keep the length just long enough that you'll be able to sweep to the side for a different effect. We suggest some Jonathan Silky Dirt Shine & Define Creme ($28) to smooth out your hair first, and then a light spray of High Shine Flexible Hairspray ($30) to keep your bangs from taking on a life of their own.
