Banana Republic Goes High(er) Class With BR Monogram

After the launch of its BR Monogram men’s line in the fall, Banana Republic has now started selling the women’s version, a limited-edition collection of clothes priced 30 to 40 percent above its flagship line. While the numbers may sound scary, the pieces – with many rendered in silk, cashmere, and luxurious blends – top out at $295, offering some bang for your fashion buck.

The clothes are available online, but after reading about the freestanding BR Monogram store in downtown Manhattan, we can’t help but feel like part of the price is about the BR Monogram experience: stylists, not salespeople, will help you choose a look, an on-site tailor will alter garments gratis, and you never have to stand in a checkout line, since the register is behind a curtain. Hand off your purchase to a stylist and sip water while she disappears to finish the transaction.

But the sophisticated, classic-looking pieces deserve some attention even without the added atmosphere.

The wool-and-silk pencil skirt ($115) and ¾ sleeve blazer ($225) come in light colors and sport slightly abbreviated hemlines, making them an ideal spring/summer suit.


The puff-sleeve chain link dress ($150) has demurely sexy keyholes at the front and back, and short sleeves that let you slip into more modest environments without having to carry around a cardigan.
