Who’s as difficult to shop for as your man? Guys just always seem to be content with what they already have, and rarely get excited over a pair of shoes the way we do. We wanted to know what exactly we should be looking for when we’re out shopping for them this year, so we enlisted the help of guy’s gifting expert Rishi Prabhu. He also happens to be the founder of Bespoke Post, the subscription service that provides monthly themed ‘boxes of awesome’ to members. After you gain his insight on what men really want, click through the slideshow to see the very cool Bespoke Post boxes available this holiday season–like our personal favorite, the “Aged” box with tools for aging any liquor or mixed drink. (So, yea, better than the socks you gave him last year.)
SHEfinds: What do men wish women knew about buying them gifts?
Rishi Prabhu: We agree, we are hard to shop for because other than big ticket items, we don’t even know what we want.
SF: So, when we’re choosing a gift for a guy–what factors most: the price, how personalized it is, or how ‘cool’ it will make them look?
RP: I think it’s a healthy combination of all three, with personalization taking the lead. There’s obviously some “value” range that you will be internally aiming for depending on your relationship, and you should always aim to get something that makes them feel good.
All in all, the more personalized the better. The thoughtfulness goes a long way in making a gift stand out.
SF: What should a girl get for a guy she hasn’t been dating for very long?
RP: An event, but don’t plan it for too far in the future. It should be a week or two from his birthday/the holiday. Rock out at a concert, spin some pies at a pizza making class, or have some laughs at a comedy club. You get the point. And hey, if the relationship goes south at least you got to do something fun.
SF: When in doubt, buy a _______ for a guy.
RP: Gift subscription to Bespoke Post—just kidding, kind of. A classy bottle of booze always goes a long way. Scotch usually works, but try something unique, like a Mezcal for an added “wow” factor.
SF: What is the best holiday gift you have ever received?
RP: Nintendo—the original one. Super Mario Bros 3 was just transcendent.
