Women with petite bodies have some special considerations when it comes to shopping for pants. Follow these five rules when shopping for pants to find a pair that most flatters your figure.
Think Vertical. Any sort of vertical element will make your legs seem longer than they actually are. This could be pinstripes, cords, long pleats or anything else that prompts the eye to move up and down. For the same reason, anything that breaks up those vertical elements should be avoided. Of course horizontal stripes are a no-go, but so are more more subtle horizontal details like cuffed hems.
Go Long. Pay close attention to the bottoms of your pants – specifically, where they end. Your best option are pants that are somewhat long (think trousers), as they will cover your shoes or boots and create a more seamless vertical line. (Bonus tip: Choose shoes that are the same color as your pants to further lengthen your legs.) Pants that are tapered at the bottoms or fall at or above the ankle are less flattering choices.
Be Wary of Flares. With their wide bottoms, flared jeans and pants can be dangerous choices for petite women. The wider the bottoms of your pants, the shorter your pants will look. Flares with tight knees are especially problematic, as they make the flares look even larger in relation. Pants that have a more consistent width from top to bottom are better choices, like straight leg pants. On the same note, pants with wide bottoms, whether cropped or full length, should be avoided.
Choose Something Slim. As a general rule, petite women look better in clothes that are fitted or semi-fitted. Clothes that are super loose or super tight won’t flatter your body. In terms of pants, a trouser-like cut that’s straight and slim will look best and make you look longer than you are. If you absolutely love the look of loose pants, buckle on a belt to define your waist and give your body some shape.
Try a High Waist. High-waisted pants will make your legs look longer, which will in turn lengthen your entire body. Make sure to tuck in your shirt when you wear these pants, as it will divide your body into an upper third and a lower two thirds – something that’s flattering to any figure.
