The One Lipstick Trend Every Woman Should Try This Summer According To A Makeup Artist

I’m definitely a lipstick girl; I don’t often leave home with bare lips. But like most people, I have a few go-to colors and formulas that I love and I rarely deviate from them.

But now that summer is here, I’ve been feeling a bit adventurous. So when I had the opportunity to chat up BUXOM’s Director of Global Education and Artistry David Birdwell, I couldn’t help but pick his brain on the lipstick trend to try this summer. His take? Pink!

I was initially like, Whoa!, but David quickly clarified that pink doesn’t always mean that bubblegum saccharine hue you’re probably envisioning. Instead, he recommends a deeper pink, like a raspberry tone. His favorite universally flattering pink shade? BUXOM’s new Full Force Plumping Lipstick in Lover.

Here’s what it looks like on a few different skin tones:

Super pretty, right? Now before you go swiping on your pink lipstick the traditional way, there’s one other trend to try. Rather than going for that perfect “in the lines” look, David suggests trying a more blurred effect. To create this look, rub your ring finger across the top of your lipstick, then gently pat the color onto your lips. Don’t worry, it’s not supposed to look crisp and perfect; you’re going for soft, dreamy and romantic.

One last tip from the master makeup artist himself? Rather than clean the lipstick off your finger with a makeup wipe when you’re done with your lips, use whatever is left on your fingers on your cheeks! Not only will it give you a pretty sunkissed look, but it will tie your whole face together and make you look more vibrant and gorgeous.

So there you have it! Go get your pink lipstick ASAP and use your fingers to apply it to your lips and your cheeks!
