Hands Down, This Is The Best Coat To Travel With

Every year, I plan a family getaway in March. It just so happens that my daughter’s spring break always falls around the same time as my birthday, so it’s the perfect reason to pack up and get away. We normally head somewhere warm, but this year we switched things up and decided to head to Europe for our annual trip. Italy, to be exact!

I was super stoked when I booked the trip. The thought of all the art and architecture and pasta and gelato made me giddy. But as our travel date drew closer, I started panicking. How the heck do you pack for a vacation that’s not somewhere warm?! I started obsessively checking the weather and things were looking bleak. Not only were temperatures only in the mid-40s and -50s, but there was lots of rain in the forecast.

I was so freaked that I actually started a handwritten list of all the outerwear options that might work for this 10-day trip. Rain jacket layered over leather jacket. Wool blazer with a fleece hoodie. Full on puffy coat. And then the best thing ever happened. The team at Ministry of Supply sent me an email about their brand new Aurora Coat. As soon as I saw it, I knew this was the one; the perfect coat to travel with.

As soon as the coat arrived, my mind was finally at ease. Not only is it the perfect weight–not too heavy, but definitely not a windbreaker either–but the shape is so flattering. You know how some insulated coats make you look like a big marshmallow? Not the case with this one! But thanks to the 40-gram fill, it actually did keep me warm on 40-degree days in Rome without any bulk whatsoever.

As luck would have it, it rained every single day for the first 4 days we were in Italy and not only did this coat keep me warm, but it also kept me dry! Given how light this coat is–I literally stuffed it into a backpack was still able to fit everything I normally carry in a handbag–I’m convinced this is the perfect outerwear piece for anyone traveling anywhere that isn’t completely tropical. I will admit, I love coats and I own quite a few, but this is hands down definitely one of the best in terms of versatility, warmth and fit. Get yourself one ASAP!
