Time to toss those totes and crossbody bags because the “It” accessories for spring include a throwback and a breakthrough style.

If the last time you wore a backpack was in high school, then you’re in for a total time warp. While the trend isn’t entirely new, designers have had the time to come up with more fashion-friendly versions that are a far cry from the canvas Jansports that we remember. As for bucket bags, they’ve slowly been gaining traction since we spotted Alexander Wang bringing them back to the fashion forefront with his Diego Bucket Bag ($875). And now it’s just as common to see this style as it is spotting a hobo bag on a celebrity’s shoulder.

Both styles are total upgrades to your usual set of handbags. The backpack is pretty much arms-free and so much easier on your shoulders (see ya, scoliosis!). And the bucket bags can be closed with a simple drawstring, which makes being on-the-go a total cinch (literally). But the big question is, which style do you prefer? Or better yet, why not just own both? Check out our slideshow of backpacks and bucket bags (and say that five times fast!) for you to wear this spring.
