It has definitely been quite the year for Caitlyn Jenner. Her year kicked off in April when the former Olympian first announced in an interview with Diane Sawyer that she was transgender. This interview came about before she first introduced herself to the world as Caitlyn on the June cover of Vanity Fair. Now, she’s recognized at Glamour magazine’s 25th annual Women of the Year awards as “The Transgender Champion.”
Jenner’s speech last night was filled with humor, emotions, and honesty. She started off with a quote, “There was a French activist and writer, Simone de Beauvoir, who said, ‘You are not born woman. You become one’ … Words I live by.” With that said, instantly the crowd and all us watching were put into perspective of a life filled with confusion, isolation, and fear. This was what Jenner admits her life was before her transition.
Jenner also confides about how right before her transition, she kept asking herself, “‘What am I gonna do with my life?’, I isolated myself and lied to myself and lied to the world for so long: ‘What am I gonna do with my life?'”. Then she brings us full circle with what she discovered about her identity and her purpose in life after the transition was complete, “Of all the things I’ve done in my life, Caity is why God put me on this earth: to tell my story; to be honest with myself about who I am. And in doing that, making a difference in the world. And I’m very happy to be living on the other side. I am so blessed I have family. And not one of them has abandoned me; they’ve all been support of me. It’s incredible,” Jenner says with Kylie Jenner who was in attendance with Jenner despite a wardrobe malfunction.

But the most pivotal moment of the night was when Jenner revealed her biggest, emotional and personal milestone:

“To Glamour magazine, I got to tell you a story quickly. I haven’t been on the airlines for over a year. Why? Because I haven’t had an authentic ID. Finally, last week I got my driver’s license and gender marker F. It’s always the little things in life. I am sitting on the plane for the first time reading Glamour magazine and not having to fold over the cover so no one can see what I was actually reading, and I had it opened up beautifully and just reading through Glamour magazine was absolutely great. So thank you, Glamour magazine for honoring me tonight. I never in a million years thought I’d be here and I am sure you didn’t either.”
As always, Jenner leaves us speechless. She has already taught us so much within this past year, we can’t wait to see what she has in store next!
