Cancel Your Gym Membership: The Bikini Is Officially Dead

The one-piece swimsuit, previously reserved for moms and lifeguards, is finally getting its day in the sun. After long being overshadowed by its teeny weeny counterpart, the bikini, the one piece is projected to be the most in-demand swimwear of 2013. That’s right: cancel that gym membership, fire your trainer and load up on Hostess cupcakes – the muffin top zone will be comfortably covered this year.

According to the NY Post, swimwear shops are reporting a 17-20% increase in sales of full coverage suits over last year. And you can thank designers like Miu Miu,  Karl Lagerfeld and Norma Kamali who included “maillots” (fancy speak for one piece)  in their 2013 swimwear collections, thus starting the trend which has trickled down to more affordable brands like Tory Burch and J.Crew. A quick glance at Net-A-Porter’s swimwear page proves their point: you’ll find countless stylish one-piece suits that are neither mom-ish nor scandalous. Further proof? Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergera, and Kate Moss are all on board with this trend.

So, are you in? Let us know in the comments section below whether this is the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread (mmm, I’ll have some of that, please!), or if you think one pieces are still too matronly to wear.
