11 Things No One Tells You About Buying A Wedding Dress

It's one of the most exciting parts of the wedding planning process, but buying a dress is about more than trying on different shapes and silhouettes. Check out these 11 unexpected facts about this bridal task.

You need to come up with a price point.

If you walk into a bridal salon and just ask to see dresses, chances are good that the salesperson will pull out the priciest gowns first in the hopes that you fall in love with something out of your price range. Come in with a very clear idea of how much you want to spend and stay in that range.

Everyone will have an opinion.

Everyone has different taste when it comes to fashion—especially wedding dresses. So choose your shopping companions wisely. You don’t want too many cooks in the kitchen filling your head with their own ideas and opinions about something you’ll be wearing.

You should bring the right undergarments.

The right bra and underwear (think Spanx) can really change the look of a dress. To get the full effect, bring these with you when shopping.

Sizes are different.

While you might be a size 6 or 8 in "regular" clothes, you might be a 10 or 12 in wedding gowns, so don’t feel the need to hit the gym right after leaving the bridal salon.

You should step out of your comfort zone.

Although you might walk into the salon with a very specific idea of what gown style you want to wear on your big day, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also try on other options. So try on the dress that your mom or best friend recommends. They might just surprise you by picking out the perfect one.

The salesperson really does know her stuff.

Bridal salon consultants have seen brides of all shapes and sizes, and they really do have a talent for knowing which dresses will work for each one. So while you certainly want to give clear direction on what you're looking for, be sure to listen to your salesperson’s guidance as well. You will try on many dresses.

You've probably read those stories where brides declare their dream dress was the first one they tried on. Well, that doesn't happen for everyone, so don't get discouraged if it takes a variety of gowns--and more than one visit to a few bridal salons--before you find "the one."

You will get tired.

Regardless of how exciting dress shopping can be, there will come a point when you're just over it. You’re tired, hungry and cranky--and this is a good time to take a break or stop for the day.

You should ask for a discount.

Just like every other wedding vendor, don’t be shy about asking if there are any discounts or deals that your bridal salon can offer you before your sign on the dotted line.

You will need to bring your wallet.

If you find your dream dress, you'll need to put down a deposit before the salon will place your order from the designer.

You might not cry.

The day can be emotional, but if you (or your mom) don’t burst into tears at the sight of you in your dress, it doesn’t mean you’re all not happy about the experience. Don’t put pressure on yourself to have that moment you’ve watched in rom coms or Say Yes to the Dress.
