Let’s be honest: we all get stressed, lose sleep, indulge in processed foods and skip workouts. That’s just life and no one is perfect. But it does result in internal inflammation that’s directly linked to insulin resistance and weight gain. So if you start the day with an anti-inflammatory supplement, it can offload inflammation, stop weight gain and make your belly feel balanced. All of this contributes to improving your metabolism – your body’s method of using and expending energy. When your metabolism is quick, you’ll likely be able to lose weight easier than when you have a sluggish metabolism. And this is the supplement that will help.
Grab your favorite mug and put a kettle on the stove. “Including a cup of green tea in the morning with your breakfast and not on an empty stomach can possibly help with weight loss,” says Dr. Jennifer Stagg, naturopathic physician. So why do you need to have hot green tea in the a.m.? “It appears green tea should be consumed during the light phase – the morning - of our 24 hour circadian rhythm because that timeframe greatly impacts fat metabolism,” says Dr. Stagg.
Green tea is naturally high in catechins (ECGC and polyphenols), which inhibit body fat from accumulating. Studies have shown people who drink green tea burn up to an extra 70-100 calories per day. It also contains caffeine that works with the catechins to further increase fat burn. Another study suggests that green tea, or a green tea supplement, may be able to help your metabolism speed up and your body shed pounds.
Experts believe the tea has a positive effect on hormones related to fat metabolism including ghrelin and adiponectin. Ghrelin is the hormone responsible for increasing appetite. Adiponectin is involved in regulating glucose levels and breaking down fatty acids in the body. A clinical study of more than 100 women with excess belly fat who drank green tea for 12 weeks had significant reductions in waist circumference. And aside from the positive body effects it’s incredibly soothing to sip on green tea when your belly feels like a gas-filled balloon.
Some days we get creative and create green tea-based drinks like this anti-bloat powerhouse with green tea, ginger and pineapple. Blend fresh chunks of pineapple with a cup of green tea and a small piece of fresh ginger plus ice. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and keeps your digestive track running smoothly. Pineapple has potassium plus lots of enzymes to ease digestion.
