There’s lots of talk about tea — especially when it comes to the beverages’s magical metabolism-boosting powers.

But it may be time to set a few things straight about tea, considering how many claims are made about its ability to shed weight and stubborn fat.

This is the one anti-inflammatory tea you should be having every morning to get rid of stubborn belly fat for good, according to a dietitian.

Some teas — two in particular — are backed by scientific studies that show they can actually increase your metabolism through a process called thermogenesis. But a number of “detox teas” have been introduced to the market in recent years and their lofty claims about weight loss benefits aren’t always accurate — nor are they always safe.

Some of these teas rely on diuretic and laxative ingredients like nettle leaf or senna leaf.

“This does not facilitate increased fat burning, just temporary decreased weight due to loss of body waste and water weight,” dietitian Anna Taylor, MS, RD, LD told Cleveland Clinic.

There’s absolutely no need to spend a lot of money on detox teas — or risk your health and wellbeing.

If you want to incorporate a tea into your regimen that can actually help boost your metabolism, your two best choices are green or black tea.

Both green and black teas are derived from a a shrub called Camellia sinensis, with the main difference being that black tea leaves are oxidized before they are dried.

“Both green and black teas offer health benefits,” says Taylor. “However, green tea touts more phytonutrient and antioxidant content than black tea.”

The antioxidants found in green tea and black tea — as well as their caffeine content — work together to boost your metabolism and give your body a nice little kick in the morning that helps with weight loss.

Of course, your efforts to lose weight are only as good as your healthy diet and exercise efforts. Increase the amounts of fiber and protein you eat, decrease sugar and processed foods, and add a cup or two of green or black tea to your morning routine and you’ll see positive changes sooner rather than later.
