If you are trying to lose weight and you’re over 40, you may be facing new challenges that include a slower metabolism, a more hectic life that doesn’t leave a lot of time for exercise and meal planning, and hormonal changes that occur around peri-menopause and menopause.

It’s never easy to lose weight and burn fat. A sensible, balanced diet and exercise are the most important key factors needed to help with the process — but the right vitamins can help.

Here are four anti-inflammatory vitamins nutritionists say basically melt fat over 40.

B Vitamins

All of the B vitamins work together to ensure your metabolism is functioning well, putting you in a better position to lose weight and burn fat. There are eight B vitamins in total and many can be found in foods like whole grains, beans, lentils, milk, eggs, lean meat, and bananas. But some vitamins, including B-12, are only found in animal-based products and are difficult to obtain if you are a vegan or vegetarian.

In addition to eating foods that contain B vitamins, it may be a good idea to take a B-complex vitamin supplement.

Vitamin D

Otherwise known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D has been found in lower levels in people who are overweight and obese. The connection isn’t very clear yet and more research needs to be done, but the belief is that people who take both vitamin D and calcium lose more weight than those who do not.

This vitamin can be found in fortified milk and yogurt, tuna, sardines, salmon, egg yolk, and fortified cereals.

You may not hear as much about magnesium as you do other vitamins and minerals, but it’s incredibly important for controlling blood sugar levels, regulating blood pressure levels, and helping you maintain proper energy levels.

Be careful if you are taking a magnesium supplement and always check with your doctor first to ensure you’re taking just enough (and not too much, which can cause stomach trouble). Magnesium can also be found in nuts, legumes, and dark leafy green vegetables.

It’s not a vitamin or mineral, but taking a daily probiotic may just help you lose more weight and burn more fat — stubborn visceral fat around your belly and back. Probiotics are live bacteria — “good” bacteria — that balance the levels of “bad” bacteria located in your gut. Some studies show that people with higher levels of bad bacteria also tend to be overweight or obese, so a daily probiotic is a great supplement to include in your regimen.

Probiotics can also be found in foods like yogurt, miso, kefir, and kimchi.
