"High sodium and fat content in bologna can significantly elevate cholesterol levels, directly contributing to heart disease risk," warns Andrews, citing research linking processed meats like bologna to cardiovascular ailments and even increased mortality rates.

3. Salami

Despite its allure (and its common place on charcuterie boards), salami harbors hidden dangers for heart health. "Salami is another ultra-processed meat that contains a lot of sodium and fat but little protein," Andrews warns. Moreover, she points out its potential to drive heart disease risk through heightened blood pressure, arterial inflammation, and raised cholesterol levels, all of which are pivotal factors in cardiovascular health. "A study in mice found that a diet high in pork was linked with elevated markers of inflammation, which could impact the risk of heart disease," she tells us. Yikes!

4. Sausage

Andrews points out its dual threat of high fat and sodium content, both of which are closely linked to heart disease.
