So you just finished an intense workout at the gym. You're heading home and the first thing you want to do, obviously, is shower. Great! Showering after a workout is crucial as it removes sweat and bacteria that may have accumulated during your workout. But there are things you should not do post-workout as well, like using THESE popular beauty products. Dermatologists say they could be the cause for all of your post-workout breakouts!
Hair products like hairspray should be avoided right after a workout. "Many people make the mistake of using heavy conditioners or hairsprays," says dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman. "But, as your body is still warm, these products will melt and travel downward to your face and clog pores."
In fact, these products can even cause acne and irritation if used at the wrong times--like, after a workout per se. According to dermatologist Dr. Todd Plott, clogged pores are not only difficult to de-clog, but can also cause blackheads, whiteheads and acne. These are the last thing we want to have plaguing our face post-workout!
Dr. Engelman also suggests avoiding heavy makeup after a workout. If you must wear makeup post-workout, she suggests using light makeup products like a tinted moisturizer. "After working out, your skin is glowing, so let your natural radiance shine through with just a bit of tinted makeup," the New York-based dermatologist says.
