Those that suffer from dry skin know that battling dry patches and discomfort isn’t only exclusive to the cold, winter months; it happens all year long. Recruiting the help of a nourishing, ceramide-rich moisturizer is one of the most effective ways to combat dry skin and strengthen the moisture barrier for hydrated, plumper-looking skin. “Think of ceramides as the mortar between bricks—if the bricks are your skin cells. Ceramides help hold skin together by forming a protective layer that limits moisture loss and protects against visible damage from pollution and other environmental stressors,” according to the experts at Paula’s Choice.

What Do Ceramides Do In Skincare?

Ceramides are veteran skincare ingredients and renowned for their hydrating properties. These lipids are naturally made by the skin and play an important role in protecting it from exposure to environmental aggressors in addition to promoting a smoother, plumper skin. "Ceramides are a vital component of the skin," explains Audrey Kunin, a dermatologist in Kansas City, Missouri. "They are the body's natural moisturizer, and the barrier that prevents dehydration."

In fact, New York City-based dermatologist Sejal Shah, says that flakiness and dry patches are more likely to occur if the skin doesn't have enough ceramides. "When the skin lacks ceramides, the barrier becomes compromised, resulting in dryness and irritation," she tells Allure. Ceramide production naturally declines once we reach our 20s, which is why it's recommended to follow a skincare routine that replenishes the ceramides in your skin and also lead a healthy lifestyle.

"Diet influences barrier production in skin," Harold Lancer, a dermatologist based in Beverly Hills, explains. "Eat lots of leafy greens, lean protein, and up your oil intake [with] good oils like avocado and coconut."

It's also a good idea to stay away from products that are too harsh for your skin as they can negatively affect your ceramides as well. "Basically anything that will strip your skin of oils can cause your ceramide levels to suffer," says cosmetic chemist James Hammer, who lists the overuse of abrasive cleansers and exfoliants and exposure to harsh detergents and solvents like hand sanitizers as some of the biggest culprits.
